Heroism isn't a gift, rather a cruel punishment. In sentenced to be a hero the characters need to fight endless wars, strength and ability is their only way to survive. Even if the hero's get resurrected their soul slowly gets chipped away till they are a walking hollow avatar or a mindless husk of once was.
How the Hero System works
In Sentenced to be a hero there are two main combat forces: The Holy Knights (or Holy Order) who are voluntary warriors such as knights or paladins and are highly respected and honoured. Then there are the Penal Heroes (or Sentanced Heroes). These are conviceted crimanls who have commited heinous crimes such as killing a goddess, terrorism and mass murder. Instead of getting executed they become heroes. This sentance binds them to a compulsory frontline millitary service who serve as scouts, vanguardm suicide squads and canon fodder to support the Holy Knights. The main draw back of becoming a hero is the enforced ressurrection. For example when a hero dies in battle theyr'e automatically revived which creates immortality so they can be redeployed endlessly. However the drawback is that each time they are revived they lose their sense of self such as fragments of their memories, personality and sanity over time basically making them a soulless vessel which makes the whole "sentenced to be a hero" a slow and cruel psychological torture. Death offers no escape and this is a sentence worse than death. To keep the heroes in-line they have explosive runes or seals placed around their neck which can detonate if they disobey any order or get out of control. Any power a hero has comes from pre-sentenced abilities such as being a former holy knight like the main protagonist or even pacts with a goddess also like the main protagonist.
Characters ranked
With all that explained, we know that heroes and holy knight all have some sort of power enhanced strength so this character ranking is based on power, strength and ability and not solely on just one aspect of their power.
Dorter Ruzlas

Coming in at number 10 is Dorter Ruzlas, who is also the first hero we see in the anime. In the series he is normally always paired with Xylo the main protagonist. While not the most strongest character in the heroes unit, he does make a huge contribution to it overal, afterall he saved Xylo in the first episode of season 1. He posseses one of the best eyesight among all the heroes which makes him a great scout for the team, hes personality also ads to this combat class with him being very cowardly and prefers to keep his distance from the enemy, but when it comes down to the hard and gritty you can always count on him.
Venetim Leopool

While other heroes excel in the art of war, Venetim excels in manipulation and strategy. This is still a strength and plays a crucial role in matters of the war. Venetim is the master of deception and the reason why he is placed as the commander of his unit. He is responsible for planning and strategizing an attack. BUT despite all his pros he also has some cons. He is much like Dorter, also cowardly but also frequently panics and is always flustered. Before he was a hero or the reason for his sentence is because he tried to incite civil war and embezzlement and fraud.
Noragalle Senridge

Noragalle is one of the oldest heroes with the heart of a lion, he's speeches rally the entire unit and some would call that a strength, not physically but mind wise. Noragalle provides tactical stability and close combat support. He also specialises in engraving and adjusting holy seals which is vital for maintaining the equipment used in battle. He also possesses exceptional skill in crafting tools and weapons. He's not the brightest spark in the room but his delusion of being a true king of the federated kingdom leads him and his men to victory. In reality he was a terrorist who led a rebellion against the empire, but despite all this he truly believes that he is the true king and despite this delusion he is depicted as a a noble person who honestly cares for his people, even willing to sacrifice his own life to protect other.
Tsav

Next on the list is Tsav who has incredibly accurate marksmanship and is the sniper of the unit. He was raised in an assassination cult and his precision with the firearm goes beyond the realm of mortals, this skill borders the impossible which allows him to take down targets from extreme distances and is no doubt a big addition to the heroes strength. He has a very talkative personality and is very light hearted, but despite this he comes from a grim and dark history of slaying or butchering people to cover his tracks in the assassinations. He also becomes emotionally attached to his targets.
Patausche Kivia

Patausche is a secondary character in the series, not one of the main protagonists, but still an important one none the less. She is the commander of a holy knight order and a high ranking warrior who is highly trained. Her source of power is her devotion to the battle and is even prepared to throw down her life for her beliefs. This stern nature of hers helps her maintain order in her unit, but this isn't the only reason why she is a commander. She is also a master swordsman who can hold her own against a full on demon attack. Patausche was also the original intended person to form a contract with the goddess Teoritta but circumstances caused a different route. This is why there is so much friction from her toward the protagonist, Xylo.
Jayce Partiract

Jayce is a member of the Hero unit and he is drastically different from the others in his unit. He posses an unusual ability that allows him to communicate to dragons which is perfect for an aerial combat warrior while using a spear which makes him good for air and ground attacks. Jayce is also depicted as indifferent to others, because he only shows interest in dragons and remains cold towards humans.
Rhyno

Rhyno is a major secondary character in sentenced to be a hero and unlike the others, he actually volunteered to be a hero. His personality is one thing that's striking about him and people often refer to him as a "chad". He is highly skilled in the art of long range combat and one of his more distinct features is his massive right arm which is an oversized canon that he uses to explode demon hordes from afar.
Tatsuya

Tatsuya is the primary combatant of the hero unit and is much different to the rest. He is one of the oldest heroes here and has been resurrected over and over, that is why he has lost his cognitive self and his self awareness. This is why he remains in this drugged up like state and is also unable to talk. This is the prime example of what happens to heroes and is the ultimate punishment (losing a large piece of the soul) He has a monstrous berserk ability and specialises in close combat while wielding a massive axe. Everything about him is still unknown.
Xylo Forbartz

This is the main protagonist of the series and was the strongest warrior even before he became a hero. Xylo was the knight commander before he was sentenced and was also previously another goddesses' knight, however after a tragic event, everything changed and now he is sentenced to be a hero for eternity. Xylo uses throwing swords and is able to use it as explosives upon impact of the enemy. He has also entered into a pact with the Goddess Teorrita. This pact allows the Goddess to summon a bunch of swords to strike down the enemy instantly. He can also trigger flight but only temporarily using magic seals that was places on his feet.
Teorrita

Teorrita is the strongest in all of the series and is described as the most powerful weapon because of her total mastery over the blade which makes her the perfect fit for Xylo. She is the "13th Goddess of swords". she can manifest thousands of swords or even summon a massive blade. Her arsenal of summons include both holy swords and cursed ones each with unique properties. Her personality is shaped by her constant need for praise because she is a goddess. This gives her motivation. Her flaws is that her much like the rest of the main hero party in the series, tend to sacrifice themselves for the sake of others.
