Fantasy anime tend to always have the "Hero" is someone who will eventually defeat the Demon King or someone with unimaginable power, but Sentenced to be a Hero is taking another approach, and it seems like a breath of fresh air in this oversaturated genre.
Studio Kai's "Sentenced to be a Hero" has taken over 2026's anime Winter season and I for one can't get enough of Xylo and the Goddess Teorria. But, what makes this series so interesting? is it because it's something that has never been done before? or is it simply because the anime series has the animation quality of Mushoku Tensei? or could it be because it's just a good overall story? Season 1 aired in January 2026 and it's something that feels special. If you don't know what I mean you can read the review here.
What is a Hero?
Being a hero means doing the right thing or being one of the strongest in the world right? Well, no. In Sentenced to be a Hero, being a hero is a punishment, but not any ordinary punishment, this one has a lasting impact. Being a hero means being a tool and one of the Theocratic government's most powerful weapons. When a person commits a bad crime, they are sentenced to be a hero to fight the Demon Kings army for all eternity. But eternity can be a long time and it also can't. If a Hero doesn't die, they can live for eternity but if they keep dying they really aren't living. Each time a hero gets killed they are resurrected to fight once more, but each death comes with the highest degree of risk. When a hero dies and gets resurrected, he/she loses a piece of their soul each time, after enough deaths they will simply just be a hollow husk of what they once were. So if you thinking why cant they just run away? Well, in order to keep the heroes in-line, the Theocratic government places seals around their necks which explodes if the heroes try to rebel.
The hierarchy in Sentenced to be a Hero

As with everything, there is always a system in place where one person rules over another and a system which isn't always fair, but sometimes this happens to keep everything in order and balanced, however in Sentenced to be a Hero the system is corrupt. Lets break it down.
High Council / Holy Order leadership
At the very top of this system sits the High Council who are the top ruling authorities of the kingdom. This council are the governing body that are gods aligned, so think church officials and your normal kingdom higher ups. This council decides the sentencing of the heroes and also control the runes or explosives that enforce the heroes to obey.
The Goddesses
Second from the top of the system sits the Goddesses. These are powerful living weapons who need to summon a pact with a knight to access their full power. They usually act as partners in battle for example Xylo was pacted with Godess Teorrita. She summons a volley of swords from the sky and can create holy and even cursed swords out of thin air. This is something that's really interesting. The concept of goddesses using knights to access their power sets this anime apart from others. For example the main protagonist needs someone else to be strong, and it's done in a way that doesn't change your mind about the MC.
Holy Knights
Directly below the Holy council sits the Holy Knights who are an elite millitary force. These are non-sentenced soldiers backed by the church and some of which get the support or form a pact with a goddess to get even more powerful. Think of your chivalry knights who get all the fame and glory, that is who the holy knights are. The main protagonist Xylo was also one before the was framed for murder by the High council.
Civilians / Non-Sentenced Humans
Under the Holy Knights are the civillians or the non sentenced humans. They are protected by the Heroes but are mostly ignorant to the higherups cruelty and mostly ignore it. They also believe that the heroes are a necessary sacrifice to keep the demon army in check and to protect the borders.
Penal Hero Unit Commanders
Below the civilians are the Penal unit commanders. The penal unit is the unit the sentanced hero's are assigned to. These commanders supervise a specific unit of heroes and issue orders but they do not fight on the front line. They also have the power to execute the heroes on the spot for failure. Think of them as a strategist officer and can be ordered around by the Holy knights. They are also Sentenced Heroes.
Penal Hero Units
Sitting at the bottom of the system is the convicted felons of the units. These are newly sentenced heroes and long time heroes. They obey orders given from the commander and are used as pawns by the hold knights. They are also used as shields in case the holy knights need to make an escape.
A Hero Without Choice Is Just a Weapon
With the hierarchy being so out of touch and the heroes being immortal, this makes for the worst case scenario. But a hero without a choice tends to shift this to the extremes. In most fantasy anime heroism is defined by some sort of choice. The hero either stands up and chooses to fight or he takes the other path to simply ignore it. In Sentenced to be a Hero, the hero's choice is stripped away. They are basically forced into battle with only the promise of death and what even more ridicule is that if they don't do this they die, if they fight they die, but the problem lies in the resurrection. Once resurrected they loose parts of their soul. What puts this story on a turning point is The Theocratic government masquerades around as righteous. This story makes it completely clear that a hero without a choice is not a symbol of hope but a weapon forged from the suffering and as in any story or scenarios like this, it's bound to shatter and cause an uprising sooner or later.
This whole plot and the intricate details really drew me into the story. Its a story no different to our own world in ways. It show just how the Hierarchy really affects everything, similar to a chain, if one link breaks the entire thing is ruined. This is the same for the hierarchy system in Sentenced to be a Hero. If the system does not work, well for example the penal heroes or even just the poor civilians have to rebel, it shatters everything.
An engaging story that has to be seen!
I've seen ALOT of anime, and this one sets itself apart from the rest, not for its high quality animation or even story at that. For me it's simply because it's original and doesn't try to be anything other than itself. The author "Rocket Shoka" wrote an amazing story and to me it seems like he wanted to challenge the conventional notion of what it means to be a hero, this could of went in another direction because it's not what people want when they think of a hero. Most people think a hero will come and save the day and everyone will praise them and they will have glory, but the author chose to go the opposite route of the actual term "hero". This a brutal war story that feels grounded even with the ton of fantasy elements for example we see in the first episode when Xylo saves the holy night and after that a huge battle took place with the Goddesses power and a big demon army on the front line. A truly engaging story that just has to be seen even if you aren't into the war focused setting. This series is mixed, we have themes of bonding, the fantasy aspect mixed with dark fantasy. There is also humour and there isn't some girl swooning over the protagonist which does seem over saturated now a days in an anime.
Sentenced to be a Hero can be watched on the following streaming services as of January 28, 2026.
