There are a lot of fantasy-isekai's out there but none hit quite like Ascendance of a bookworm. On the outside looking in it feels like some random over saturated trope in the low budget anime field, but after watching the first 3 episodes it hits you like "this series is really good". I remember the first time watching this show, it got me staying up well into the early mornings and so few anime do this for me. If I had to compare this series with another, I'd say it compares well with The Apothecary Diaries. It feels like a slice of life anime that the world builds as the story continues even though everything is designated in the same place, similar to The apothecary diaries. For example The Apothecary Diaries mainly takes place in the rear palace and Ascendance of a bookworm taking place mainly in the slums area also called the City of Ehrenfest.
So we can all be rest assured that this new season is going to change everything and I'm not talking about the story itself rather the outside influence which we will touch up below.
Release Date Announced!
Today on January 19, 2026. The studio announced that the new season (season 4) of Ascendance of a bookworm will be released on April 4, 2026 for 2 consecutive cours. That means a 6 month series! This is out the norm for this anime, with the previous later seasons being roughly 10 episodes each. The reason for this comes down to the outside influence i mentioned earlier. This season will not be animated by Ajia-do Animation works who animated the previous seasons, this time Season 4 will be animated by none other than Wit studio who are the same studio behind Attack on Titan, Spy X Family, Vinland saga and many many more popular titles.

A long with the announcement we also got a new visual image featuring Myne and Ferdinand.
The visual image teases the release date set for April 4th and showcases these two characters in a sunny moonlight setting with a tree that almost makes it symbolise nobility.
A new PV trailer was also released which showcases the new season. This trialer really packs a punch especially with Wit Studio handling the animation and this can clearly be seen in this trailer. The movement and just overall line feel more alive. I'm not saying the previous seasons were animated bad, actually the opposite, they were really good. This just shows HOW GOOD this new season will be be.
The Studio also announced a AnimeJapan event at the Green Stage which will be held at Tokyo Big Sight from March 28, 2026 (Saturday) to March 29, 2025 (Sunday). During this event Ascendance of a bookworm will have a live event and this comes just a week before the world-wide release of Season 4. This booth will feature exabits and even the latest footage from the new season, so think of it as a early preview of sorts.
Additionally on Sunday march 8, 2026 which is a month before the nationwide airing of season 4, there will also be an advanced screening where you can watch the main story as well as a special event featuring Iguchi Yuka who plays the role as Mune, Hayami Shou, who plas the role as Ferdinand and Inoue Kazuhiko who plays the role as Sylvester will be present at this event. Although on the website it says that ticket sales will be announced at a later date, and this is also likely only available as a live event in Japan.
The opening theme song for season 4 has also been decided and will be titled "Pages" by a female vocal group named Little Glee Monster.
Miya Kazuki who is the original author also commented that both the song and animation are amazing and we should look forward to it. She goes on to state "Personally I really love the part at the end of the promotional video where lesser flies off to the tune of fly" (this is google translated from Japanese so words might be slightly off)
