All Known Strongest Daemons in Daemons of the Shadow Realm

Daemons, or otherwise known as Tsugai in the Japanese translations, are supernatural-like creatures that appear in pairs, mainly because of their joint powers, for example, yin and yang, if you know what I mean. Humans form contracts with these creatures to wield their abilities in battle or use them in daily life, such as mounts, for example.

This story's core revolves around this aspect, as teased already in the name (Daemons). This series is not a sequel but honestly to me it's a successor to Fullmetal Alchemist, because the same author of FMA wrote this story. I think it's the successor to FMA because obviously the author has learned over the years what works and what doesn't, and ultimately created a masterpiece here. It does give FMA vibes with the twins in this story, Yuru and Asa. The bond feels the same as FMA's Edward Elric and Alphonse Elric.

Different Daemon Types

Daemons don't have specific or strict numbered types like elements or classes; instead, they are very loosely categorized by lore, appearance, and behavior. For example, myths, legends, youkai, ghosts, and cryptids. But that is just a rough example. Below are the specific types tied to the series, but note this list is just for thematic purposes and the Daemons aren't depicted or classified into classes.

"Gods" (Kami-sama): These are the rarest form of Daemons and are usually peaceful. They live among humans without causing any kind of trouble. They also represent divine guardian-like entities.

"Youkai" (Yōkai): These are the more common types and are summoned or contracted by a human master. They obey orders loyally and are used for battle and even daily tasks. These typically resemble traditional youkai monsters or spirits.

Mythical/Fable-Inspired Daemons: These are Daemons that draw lore directly from folklore or stories.

NOTE: The manga itself does not officially categorize them with these exact labels "Mythical" or "Fable-Inspired Daemons." These are better described as thematic descriptions of the Daemons’ traits.

All Known Daemons in Daemons of the Shadow Realm

Right and Left

These are two are one of the most powerful Daemons in the series. They were originally the ancient stone guardian statues protecting a remote mountain village. After awakening they form a contract with the main protagonist Yuru during a village invasion, and become his loyal protectors.

Right is muscular and emotionally expressive male and Left is serious and always composed female. These are also my favorite ones because of course they are one of the first Daemons to be introduced in the series and as the show continues you get emotionally invested in them.

Break

Break or also known as Kai is one of the two supreme opposing powers who is destined to be with the twin of day, who is Asa the sister born during the daytime (Yuru's sister). Break has the power of destruction and dissolution. It allows the user to break or even shatter anything such as objects, structures, barriers, attacks and even contracts to a Daemon. This turns another Daemon into an uncontrollable stray. Ultimately this is the counterpart to the supreme power that's meant to go with Yuru, Fuu.

NOTE: In the series, Break isn't actually a normal Daemon (Tsugai) like the others. Regular Daemons are independent spirit beings that are contracted with humans. Break on the other hand (and its opposite, Seal) is more like a superpower that can reshape the world. HOWEVER WITH THAT BEING SAID, it's a bit tricky because Break comes from a white sort of entity that Asa meets in a void place after she dies the first time. That entity in the manga never gets called a "Daemon" the same way it does with the others like Right and Left. So we could think of this one like a Daemons ability getting handed over (sort of).

Seal

This is the supreme counterpart to Break and is also known as Fuu. This ability is destined for Yuru, the Twin of Night and Asa's brother. Seal is not typically a paired entity as stated in the previous one.

This is a reshaping ability that could have come from a Daemon or been passed on. It grants the power to seal or contain anything such as objects, people, or even powers. For example, the hidden village at the beginning of the story was thanks to this ability.

Yin-Yang

This is a powerful Daemon pair that's contracted to Asa, the Twin of Day. This Daemon takes the form of distinct mouth-like beasts that can merge together to create a single larger beast. When they are separated (the white half named Daifuku and the black half named Ohagi), they are smaller and have more of a "cute" form. These names were actually given to them by their original master, who named them after sweets.

Gabriel

Gabriel is a powerful Daemon contracted to Gabby, who is a young, skilled member of the Kagemori family and Asa's ally. This Daemon is a massive entity that resembles a set of jaws with sharp, uneven teeth and black flame-like gums, with numerous eyes scattered above and below. This Daemon can bite through nearly anything as its main attack.

These two Daemons are named Joe William Frederic Gabriel I and Kirk Douglas Auldglaive Gabriel II, although collectively they are just called Gabriel. Separated, they look like a less terrifying big jaw.

Ai and Makoto

These Daemons are contracted with jin Kagemori. Ai is a massive anglerfish-like creature that can swallow almost virtually anything, while Makoto, on the other hand, is a smaller, cuter fish that regurgitates whatever Ai has eaten, ultimately acting like a bag of sorts. This can also be used for storing weapons, tools, and pretty much anything else.

Fore Tiger and Rear Wolf

These are the Daemons contracted with Hana Danno, an associated worker with the Tadera family. This Daemon has a front-and-rear animal theme inspired by the idiom "tiger at the front and wolf at the back." This allows the Daemon to fight from the front and from the back, ultimately providing ultimate defense.

Fore Tiger (Kodetsu) takes the form of a cat which excels in scouting and tracking. Rear Wolf (Jirou) which appears as a small white dog, excels in sense of smell, allowing it to track anyone from a distance.

Hare and Tortoise

These are paired with Haruo, who is an interrogator tied to the Kagemori group. Hare is a fast-talking rabbit that excels in speed and quick attacks, while Tortoise is, as the name implies, a tortoise. This tortoise can gradually increase its weight to break bones or even restrain targets over time. Together these two can create tactical combos.

Editor's Thoughts

This is an amazing series. I was honestly blown away when I read it and I highly recommend at the very least reading the first volume to introduce yourself to the world or even reading on further. You can find all the manga volumes here.

This series feels like a Pokemon series, but more mature-themed and feels like it could be something great one day when the story is expanded further and the lore is much deeper. But ultimately it's still a masterpiece. I also love the characters and the Daemons. — Dean
