Top Most Powerful Witches in Witch Hat Atelier

Witch Hat Atelier has no shortage of strong witches, besides saying "strong" is a bit of an exaggeration. Knowledge and skill in this series determine the most powerful witch. After all, in this world there's no such thing as innate power, rather, the magic comes from sigils and how well these sigils are drawn. However, a witch can be more cunning or more strategic in the way the magic is used.

Ultimately, this magic system makes every witch equal at the starting line. This is what sets the series apart from others. Well, for me at least. Anyone in this world with conjuring ink, a pen and dedication to mastering their drawing precision and increasing their knowledge of spells will eventually become powerful.

For example a neater glyph will yield a more potent and stable effect, while a sloppy drawing will either backfire or just fail completely. Many of these witches spend years learning and experimenting before they find their footing in this world. Most witches want to be known for something.

All-in-all this series celebrates ingenuity over the typical destiny trope. A clever witch can far outmatch a technical superior one through smart spell chaining, environmental use or even unexpected creativity and this specific thing is what makes this series so special.

Top Most Powerful Witches in Witch Hat Atelier

As I said earlier, there is no shortage of powerful witches in this series, however there are a handful that we can clearly pick out the lot. These are the top most powerful witches in the series so far.

Note: The series isn’t over yet, so this list might change. Check the top of the page for the latest update date.

Lagrah

Lagrah

Lagrah is a high-ranking witch in Witch Hat Atelier and is one of the Three Wise, which is the elite council of powerful witches and as the name describes, there are 3 of them. These witches oversee society in three distinct positions.

Lagrah is called Wise of Friendship, which makes him responsible for negotiating foreign relations and diplomacy between witches and the outside world. This to me makes the series so intriguing; it's simple things like this that add an extra layer of depth to the already good, original story and themes.

Lagrah is calm, friendly, and mostly composed, this fits his role as a diplomat. But on the contrary, when dealing with the council itself, he reveals a more serious and reflective side, such as commenting insightfully on manipulative behaviours from other key figures like King Deanreldea, for example.

The title alone of being one of the Three Wise puts a witch in a position atop the rest; this title isn't just given to any ordinary witch, only to those who have exceptional skill and influence in the world.

Olruggio

Olruggio

Olruggio is one of the major supporting characters in Witch Hat Atelier and serves as a watchful eye for Qifrey's atelier. His job or role ultimately involves overseeing and protecting the workshop and the apprentices. This role also requires him to ensure that the apprentices are complying with the rules of the witches, for example, no forbidden magic and the most important one of all, no showing normal citizens how magic is performed.

Olruggio, also known as Olruggio of the Torch, is Qifrey's best friend since childhood, which means they share a deep and long standing bond. Although he does speak harshly at times, he's genuinely kind hearted and cares deeply for the atelier's residents.

He is considered one of the strongest due to his exceptional mastery over fire based magic and even was recognised as a child prodigy from the northern town of Ghodrey. Now, he is a respected figure who is also known for crafting powerful magical items like the Glowstone Path and many other contraptions.

Vinanna

Vinanna

Vinanna is one of the more prominent and authoritative characters in Witch Hat Atelier. She serves as a supreme council member of the Three Wise and holds the title of "Wise in Principles", and in this role she is responsible for adjudicating transgressions of magic law, meaning enforcing strict principles that maintain the secrecy and ethical use of magic.

This means overseeing judgements on violations of forbidden magic or exposure of it to non-witches. The most fascinating thing about her is that she is the founder and the captain of the Knights Moralis, which is an elite force of witches that investigate and capture rule breakers. And I'm not going to lie, their clothing and their aura gives goosebumps. They are almost at the top of the witch world.

Just this position alone gives her immense institutional power and influence. But Again, the title of the "Three Wise" alone means she's one of the most powerful witches. She possesses advanced expertise in drawing complexity that allows precise control over forbidden or even large scale magic. For example, Easthies challenged her but faced overwhelming resistance.

Qifrey

Qifrey

Qifrey is the central figure in Witch Hat Atelier, and personally my favourite character in this series. He reminds me a lot of Gojo from Jujutsu Kaisen. He is the master of Coco and the owner of the atelier that the 4 apprentices belong to.

What makes him so powerful is that he is the student of the most powerful, famous, and legendary witch Beldaruit. Qifrey specialises in water-based magic, like creating vapor bubbles, barriers, and large-scale water dragons.

He is a kind mentor to Coco and his other 3 apprentices; however, under this soft exterior lies a more obsessive, self-driven personal quest which is related to the Brimmed Caps and past traumas. This makes him one of the most mysterious characters in the story.

Beldaruit

Beldaruit

Beldaruit is one of the Three Wise supreme council members and holds the title of Wise in Teaching or Sage of Teaching. This makes him responsible for the education and training of new witches. This sets the standard for apprenticeships and guiding the next generation. He was the master of Qifrey, after taking him in after a traumatic event between Qifrey and the Brimmed Caps.

Due to chronic health issues such as hypermobile joints and brittle bones, he remains in bed and uses smoke magic clones to interact remotely with others; however, he appears in person for crucial events. I said earlier that Qifrey is mysterious, but this guy takes the cake. He feels like someone who must not be rivaled with. The exact theme I'm thinking of is when Gojo awakens his powers and looks very neutral, yeah, that's this guy haha.

Olruggio describes him as "inconceivably powerful but eccentric." His strength lies in his techniques like creating clones or even lifelike illusions that are indistinguishable from reality. He could realistically heal himself through forbidden magic but he chooses not to use it because it will violate the Pointed Hat principles. Not only is he really powerful, but he sticks to his morals.

Editor's Thoughts

Making this list hit me with nostalgia from the first time i read the manga, and honestly, I suggest everyone read it before starting the anime. Its so detailed and the manga adds so much more in it.

Out of this whole list Qifrey is my favorite because he gives off the Gojo vibe, it could just be the way he looks with the white hair and those eyes. But all in all this is my list of the top powerful characters in Witch Hat Atelier "SO FAR" — Dean
