Tensura or better known as That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is hands down one of the best isekai anime out there, and honestly, it's my personal favorite by a mile. But sure, a lot of fans love the classic overpowered hero or those grand driven adventures through a fantasy realm like Frieren, but this series hooks you on something way more special. That's "WORLD BUILDING" and "TRUE DRAGONS."
It takes that element and cranks it all the way up to insane levels, turning a simple slime's journey into the breath-taking evolution of the Jura Tempest Federation or more specifically, Rimuru City and right at the center of it all? The True Dragons.
These legendary beings shape the entire story's stakes, lore, and epic scale like nothing ever shown in any other anime. The lore only gets deeper as we dive into the True Dragons
What are True Dragons in Tensura (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime)

In Tensura, True Dragons represent the absolute pinnacle of existence. These beings stand as god like spiritual lifeforms far above that of a Demon Lord or True Heroes. Their very essence is that of pure natural energy in this world, and they are also more commonly referred to as natural disasters, not because that's what they are, but because that's what they can cause.
They are beings without a true physical form: for example, Rimuru is a slime, however when he becomes a True Dragon he keeps that form. So their forms are purely determined by how they see themselves—in Rimuru's case, "a harmless slime". Being made of pure energy grants these beings endless reincarnation, but only as long as their conceptual essence or the world persists.
The True Dragons

There were four original True Dragons born at the dawn of creation: Veldanava, the legendary Star King Dragon and creator god who stood above them all, but even though he weakened himself and passed away, he's still counted as a True Dragon despite being the ultimate being in this universe.
So depending on the story's timeline and if we're including the deceased True Dragon Veldanava, the total comes to four or five True Dragons. But the ones fans talk about the most is the active ones. These are the three siblings plus Rimuru stepping up as the new fourth or technically fifth. These beings are insanely rare and obviously overwhelmingly powerful: their mere existence keeps the whole world's balance in check.
Note: The list is arranged by the original True Dragons and those who came after being later in this list.
Veldanava (The Star King Dragon)

Veldanava, who is also known as the Star King Dragon and Creator of the entire Tensura universe, originated as the singular, all in one being that predated time, space, light, and darkness. However, out of pure boredom, he voluntarily shed his authority of being the "overlord" in a sense to spawn reality itself.
This led the almighty god to become something else that was woven into the fabric of his own creation. However, creating so many things and especially having a child with Lucia, who was his human wife, who gave birth to one of our favorite characters in the Tensrua world, Milim Nava.
This act greatly weakened him and drained him to a level almost that of a human with a limited lifespan. This left him vulnerable to a terrorist assassination, which not only took his life but Lucia as well over 2,000 years ago. This tragedy made Milim an orphan and could have activated his innate True Dragon resurrection, but no mention of him in the light novels to date.

Velzard (The Frost Dragon)

Velzard is known as the Frost Dragon and sometimes as the White Ice Dragon. She is the second oldest True Dragon born after Veldanava. Basically, Veldora and Velgrynd's older sister. She is the embodiment of deceleration meaning, cold and everything freezing.
As the big sister to Veldora and Velgrynd she has the habit of playfully bullying Veldora, and even killing him over and over in their early days which Veldora still fears today. Velzard is known for also being childish like Veldora, and she is also very possessive, especially to Guy Crimson, whom she fought a world shaking battle with long ago, but later as seen in the anime, they became the closest of allies.
Velgrynd (The Scorch Dragon)

Velgrynd, who is known as the Scorch Dragon, is the third-oldest True Dragon. She is the embodiment of acceleration, meaning momentum, heat, and everything fire. This would make her the fastest among all the True Dragons.
As the older sister to Veldora, she was calmer than her older sister when it came specifically to him and often spoiled Veldora.
She is a hothead and is impulsive with a passionate personality, which means she acts on her emotions fairly quickly. Her defining trait is her fierce loyalty to Rudra Nam Ul Nasca, who later we find out is connected to Masayuki.
Veldora (The Storm Dragon)

Veldora Tempest, the Storm Dragon, is the fourth-oldest True Dragon and is in fact the youngest sibling among the original four born after Veldanava, who is the Star King Dragon and creator. Veldora is the embodiment of chaos itself, as we've heard countless times from Luminous's own mouth. He also wields mastery over wind, water, and space.
However, he does also have one flaw, his endless restlessness and boredom has driven him to destructive rampages, like the one that happened around 2,000 years ago when he destroyed Demon Lord Luminous Valentine's vampire city, but not only that, another rampage happened roughly 300 years ago was when he destroyed an invading Eastern Empire army in the Jura Forest, leading to his ultimate defeat and being sealed by the Hero Chronoa in an Infinity Prison deep inside a cave.
So despite his boisterous, prideful, tactless, and famously socially awkward nature like often coming off as childish and excitable like most of us know him for. But Veldora actually stands out among True Dragons for his deep loyalty, especially after meeting Rimuru Tempest, with whom he formed an unbreakable sworn brotherhood and even treating Rimuru as a true equal and best friend who ended his long isolation and earned his unwavering devotion.
Rimuru Tempest (Chaos Creator)

Rimuru Tempest, who was originally reincarnated as a slime, achieves the pinnacle of transformations by evolving into a True Dragon. This is a spiritual lifeform and one of the highest-ranking avatars of nature.
Rimuru achieved this form because of his deep soul connection to Veldora and later the assistance from his evolved Manas: Ciel. Rimuru unlocks this form by analyzing Veldora's essence and that of other dragons, and transcends his previous Demon Lord and Demon Slime forms.
This new form has a slime-like body infused with the properties of a full True Dragon. This grants him immortality through reincarnation upon death and a near limitless magicule reserve. He also possesses the ability to wield powers like that of nothingness and pure chaos. This also places him on equal footing with all the other ancient siblings like Velzard, Velgrynd, and even Veldora.
However, with his unique Ultimate Skill Azathoth, this allows him to absorb, evolve, and even surpass cosmic threats, which would make him the absolute strongest being in the series.
Editors Thoughts

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is one of my all time favourite anime's. From the deep lore to the character's developments and even to the world building, everything is a masterpiece. Creating this list reminds me of just how much I love the story, the deep connection between all the powerful beings, all being connected to one almighty creator.
Clearly a lot of thought went into making this story and we can all appreciate that. The light novel has ended, but at least we can still look forward to years and years of the anime, and I for one cant wait to see the True Dragons in moving images, and being brought to life! — Dean
