how to watch reincarnated as a slime in order

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is easily one of my favourite anime since I got into anime as a whole. It’s one of those anime you can binge over and over without getting bored. Something about it just hits differently compared to many other shows, especially the generic ones. I think it’s the mix between world-building, a relaxing slice-of-life, and a well-fleshed-out story full of deep lore. All of that together makes it stand out.

A lot of fans (including me sometimes) just power through the main seasons and skip the extras: OVAs, movies, Slime Diaries, and side stories like Visions of Coleus. But those add some of the best world-building experiences and character moments which is definitely worth checking out if you want the full experience. So in this list of "How to Watch Reincarnated as a Slime in Order" we will start off with the Chronological order (proper timeline) and then the release order

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime started airing in October 2018 and there have been roughly seventeen different pieces of content, including seasons, OVA's and movies. This list does include fillers, but I will also add non fillers below this one.

Fillers in Reincarnated as a Slime feels more like the series itself, like they belong in the story. What brings me and so many fans back to the series is the slice of life and the world building. This series has that in spades, especially season 3. However, there was a season made to kind of express that aspect of the series, this is "The Slime Diaries".

The Slime Diaries is a 12 episode 2021 season that is a spin-off series produced by Studio Eight Bit, the same studio behind the original seasons. It focuses on the daily lives and even comedic antics of the series. It features celebrations of Rimuru and the residents of Tempest. So instead of big battles, we get the slice of life, like how Tempest grows their crops and it also bridges season 1 and 2 together with the evolution of the Great Jura forest.

Canonical Order

NOTE: This list follows the story’s proper timeline, including main seasons, movies, specials, and side content. While some episodes and OADs (like The Slime Diaries or teacher-themed shorts) are non-essential to the main plot, they add to the world, add character moments, and are included here for a full experience. You can skip them if you just want the core story, but watching everything in this order gives the most complete understanding of the story.

Movie 2: Tears of the Azure Sea

The Tears of the Azure Sea (also known as Tears of the Blue Sea) follows our favorite slime, Rimuru Tempest, and his companions as they travel to a luxurious resort island owned by Elmesia, who is the Celestial Emperor of the Sorcerous Dynasty of Sarion who we got to know much better during the second half of Season 3.

Rimuru receives an invitation from her right after the celebrations marking the founding of the Jura Tempest Federation. And i'm sure in the "lore" of this new movie, she's doing this to keep Rimuru close, specifically for future invitations to Tempest. So this would mean the movie's events is placed immediately after the end of Season 3 and serving as a bridge to Season 4.

While they are enjoying this vacation, it is interrupted by the sudden appearance of a mysterious shrine maiden named Yura. This girl hails from an underwater kingdom (known as Cayenne or Kaien) and urgently seeks Rimuru's help to stop a major crisis. This hidden undersea nation has long been protected by a slumbering guardian deity called the Aqua Dragon (or Water Dragon) that has so far granted its people centuries of peace beneath the waves.

However, a sinister plot now threatens the dragon itself! Someone is scheming to forcibly awaken it, which could unleash massive chaos and potentially lead to an invasion of the surface world. Rimuru and his companions as always must now step in to investigate this conspiracy and stop the catastrophe before it's too late.

Editors Thoughts

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime can be enjoyed canonically, by release date, or just sticking to the main seasons. The story is meant to be experienced however you prefer, so any approach works just fine. Personally, I've watched it all three ways haha, it's one of those series I always go back to when I need something comforting to watch.

Making this post reminded me why I love the series so much! There's a ton of content out there. You've got the main seasons, movies, OVAs, side stories, plus the manga and light novels. It's sad the light novel has wrapped up, but the anime still has years ahead, including more seasons and those side stories I especially love.

The Slime Diaries had a huge impact on my love for the story too. It doesn't force constant big fight scenes down your throat. Instead, it's all about the slice-of-life vibes and world-building. It feels like a relaxing take on something grand, kind of like Game of Thrones without the battles or Frieren without the epic journey. Just pure relaxation. — Dean
