Witch Hat Atelier has some of the best scenes in a story, such as the Dadah Range or even the Serpentback Cave on Cape Romonon. But what about the strongest characters? Well, it has that in spades.

Witch Hat Atelier is home to some of the most captivating characters. In this world, those who use magic not only have to have deep knowledge to cast all the spells, but they need to have skill as well, which is the most important.
When I first read the story, i thought "this is probably going to be some generic story AGAIN", but I was pleasantly surprised by the world and the characters and most of all, the originality to the core concept of the story, "To cast magic, all you need to do is draw symbols".
However, it's not as easy as that. These individuals will need to know all of the spells ins and outs, and they will need to perfect their drawing skills and the tactical way they use magic, because outsiders (those who don't know how magic REALY WORKS) should not see a witch cast.
Rules of Magic in Witch Hat Atelier

As with anything powerful, whether it be in a fiction world or in real life, strict rules and safety precautions are necessary. Without them, that power can cause catastrophic harm not only to the world itself, but to the people within it. Witch Hat Atelier is no exception. In fact, it's one of the core themes in the story, "magic must not be freely used by everyone."
This is one of my favourite aspects of the story. It adds a mysterious nature around the witches to the ordinary people, but if they knew witches were nothing special, it would also likely cause an uproar.
This is why there are specific rules put into place. Not only do these rules keep the balance in this world, but they also protect the ordinary people. The consequences of breaking these rules depend on the circumstances, but the more widely used punishment is memory erasure. Meaning, removing all knowledge of magic and how it is cast.

These rules are pretty simple and there isn’t much of them. Witches are bound by these strict laws that are there to protect them and society. The biggest and main rule is that magic must never be revealed to ordinary people and when used, a witch must avoid using it in ways that expose its mechanics. This means a witch can use the magic in front of normal citizens, for example behind a rock or building, but they cannot show that magic is cast using symbols.
There are also certain types of magic which is known as "Forbidden Magic", and as the name implies it is forbidden and using them will also result in the witch’s memory being erased.
Ranking All Apprentices (Weakest to Strongest)

Apprentices are young witches who are in training under a mentor, in this case the mentor is Qifrey. The atelier is like a workshop or studio of sorts where the magic instructions take place. For example, the house area Qifrey stays in to mentor the kids is called the atelier. It's a controlled space where apprentices can safely practice casting spells, drawing magic symbols, basically experimenting safely under supervision.
Qifrey has 4 apprentices: Coco, Agott, Richeh, and Tetia.
Note: These rankings reflect the characters’ abilities in the current timeline of Witch Hat Atelier. As the story progresses, their skills and strengths may evolve, so these positions are not permanent.
Tetia

Tetia is the most cheerful and upbeat apprentice out of the lot. She has pink wavy hair and light brown eyes, and out of all the apprentices, she is the most willing to help others aside from Coco. Although she does like most magic, one in particular stands out and that’s cloud magic. She dreams of creating the perfect cloud spell that would bring joy to other people, not much of an ambition, but it's just the way she is.

As soon as Coco enters the atelier, she was the first one to become close with her and is known for her kindness, positivity, and the way she constantly likes to thank people. Even going as far as thanking them back after they thank her, which, if I’m being honest, is a nice quirk to her personality.
While she may be the weakest of the apprentices, her spirit and liveliness is a vital part of this atelier.
Coco

Coco is one of my favourite characters in Witch Hat Atelier and although she is the main protagonist of the series. She isn’t currently the strongest member of the group of apprentices in Qifrey's atelier. But like with many stories, the protagonist very often starts out weak and grows stronger over time and the same is true for Coco.
Coco has always dreamed of becoming a witch since she was very small, but luckily she begins her journey towards that goal almost immediately after meeting Qifrey, her mentor. Her love for magic is genuine as she’s been fascinated by it since she was very young and even though she knew she couldn’t use magic at first, that never stopped her.
She is the kind of person who marvels at even the simplest spells and approaches magic with wide eyes, meaning she sees every little magical detail as an adventure. With practice, she quickly learns to draw spells, and her strongest skill becomes drawing straight-line seals. This was developed through patience and determination. Although she starts off as essentially a complete beginner, she soon begins to get the hang of things and improves rapidly.
Richeh

Richeh is one of the four apprentices in Qifrey’s atelier, and she’s best known for her long light blue hair and eyes, often decorated with crystal ribbon accessories. To me she is very distinct from the rest of the apprentices and usually comes across as calm and almost emotionless, which honestly works in her favour.

Because like I said, it really sets her apart from the rest of the group. She also has the habit of referring to herself in the third person, which adds to her uniqueness. However, beneath that composed exterior, she has a traumatic past involving an abusive former master and her older brother, something that clearly shaped who she is.
When it comes to magic, Richeh excels in crystal-based spells, especially crafting transparent ribbons and intricate tiny glyphs. On top of this, she’s also highly skilled in advanced techniques such as chaining dimensional portals together. This alone puts her above Coco and Tetia.
The reason for this is pretty simple. Her traumatic past forced her to learn magic under pressure, which gave her a stronger foundation or dependence on magic early on. She demonstrates cleaner spell construction, more precise glyph work, and much better emotional control during high-stress situations. This makes it easy to see that for the time being she is ranked second among the apprentices
Agott

Agott is hands down one of the most confident apprentices between the four. She often times sees herself as the top student in Qifrey’s atelier, and honestly, she’s got the skills to back it up. Because she’s really talented, no question, but she can come off pretty aloof and self contained at times. Agott comes from a prestigious family, known as the Arklaums, who’ve been librarians at the Tower of Tomes for generations.
The Tower of Tomes is the ultimate magic library for Pointed Hat witches, and is out on the Zozah Peninsula. It’s this huge, insane structure that magically copies and stores near identical versions of every single book, note, or diary about magic the second it’s written. This means it’s got the most massive collection of magical knowledge in the entire world locked away in there.
At first, Agott gives off arrogant vibes, especially when Coco shows up. She treats her like an outsider who doesn’t belong. Although she was presented as one technically. But as time goes on, Agott warms up a lot and gets closer to Coco. Deep down though, she’s got a big fear of failing and all this pressure to live up to her family’s legacy and was made worse after she got falsely accused of plagiarism during her apprentice test. Still, the further the story goes, the more supportive she becomes with the other three apprentices.

So ultimately she’s a total prodigy when it comes to spell creation and coming up with new ideas. Her glyphs are always precise and powerful, and she leans hard into complex multifaceted spells. This is most evident at the beginning of the series when Coco’s about to use magic but can’t because civilians are watching, Agott just casually sends up this massive bird to distract the whole crowd and cover for her. That move alone screams her genius and how quick thinking she is with magic. No doubt she’s earned my number 1 spot among the four apprentices.

Editor's Thoughts
I started reading Witch Hat Atelier for its fantasy, and I was looking for something akin to Frieren, and holy smokes, my mind was blown by the end. Writing this article took me back, and again I'm reminded of just how good this series is, and how inviting the characters are. They are completely different from each other because of their personalities, and together it all feels perfect, like a masterpiece. However, the one character that truly resonated with me was definitely Coco. Her upbeat personality and determination to never give up on magic really reminded me of Asta from Black Clover. Agott was not my favourite initially, but as the series went on, she really grows on you after knowing her backstory. But all in all, a perfect story, strong characters, and a world that feels alive. This is a fantasy series that will go down in history. — Dean
