All Known Goddesses: Sentenced to Be a Hero

In Sentenced to Be a Hero, the "goddesses" aren't in technical terms a "true divine being" or "celestial being", (such as an all-seeing god, or mythological figure) rather they are man-made biological superweapons. These beings were engineered by humanity thousands of years ago to combat outside threats and the Demon Blight. These goddesses were designed to appear as young women with human emotions and personalities. Ultimately, they are living tools. To use these powers of the goddesses, they need to form a pact with a compatible warrior.

During the first episode, the goddess of Swords, Teoritta (one of the main protagonists), awakens and sees potential in Xylo Forbartz (main protagonist). Despite the Holy Knight (Choubatsu Yuusha) being present and the one who was originally slated to claim Teoritta as her pact, the goddess adamantly chooses Xylo to be her knight, in turn refusing everyone else.

With Teoritta being a sword master, I think she knew that Xylo's hidden honour and mastery over a sword would be a perfect match. This pact between the two turned a desperate retreat by the Holy Knight into a victory against the faeries and a Demon Lord.

How Goddess Powers Work in Sentenced to Be a Hero

Each goddess has a unique, domain-specific power that manifests through a binding pact chosen with a human warrior, such as a Holy Knight or a penal Hero. This pact amplifies the knight's combat ability dramatically, which allows them to access the goddess's abilities. However, in exchange, the goddesses want praise and affection. This keeps the goddess operational.

To me this is an original idea. No other anime has done this before, and anime such as this one for example feels like such a breath of fresh air because it's not some build off of another anime. But of course all anime is inspired by one thing or another, but this show just takes everything to another level with originality. In this world goddesses are man made weapons and heroes are bad. The twist on words in everything really makes you appreciate this show that much more

Each goddess has their very own distinct domain ability. For example, Teoritta can summon swords out of thin air, or summon a volley of them to crush the enemy. This puts her in the sword domain. On the other hand, you get goddesses that can control buildings or fortresses, like Xylo's previous goddess. Even though all the goddesses have their own ability, they still share the core mechanic: praise.

Each goddess in Sentenced to Be a Hero has unique powers, personalities, and histories that shape the story in surprising ways. So let’s take a closer look at each one and discover what makes them stand out.

List of Goddesses in Sentenced to Be a Hero

Teoritta - Goddess of Swords

Teoritta is the 13th goddess in the series and referred to as "The goddess of Swords". Teoritta becomes one of the central characters in the story from the beginning of the very first episode.

At the start of episode 1, Teoritta is discovered in a box. Xylo and the thief hero, Dotta, were on a mission to help the retreating forces survive a devastating demon attack, when Dotta steals a mysterious coffin to investigate. Inside the coffin turns out to be the 13th goddess, Teoritta.

Teoritta has the sword domain ability. She wields extraordinary sword based powers that manifest through her pact with a hero. She can summon these swords out of thin air, and even create a volley of them to rain down. This power also allows her to create swords big enough to use as a defensive shield, making it both versatile and destructive.

Personally, Teoritta is one of my favourite characters in the story. Her personality, such as always going out of her way to help others. This reminds me of a certain hero from another great anime (My Hero Academia). I also think the goddess trait: needing praise and affection to fuel her power, adds depth to her character and another layer to the overall design. Every detail, from her abilities to this emotional side, works well together to build her personality, and the emphasis on affection perfectly matches who she is. Ultimately, I think the writer deserves a lot of credit for this one.

Senerva - Goddess of Fortress

Senerva was once partnered with Xylo Forbartz, who served as his goddess when he was still celebrated as the commander in the Holy Knights before his sentence.

Senerva was first introduced into the series at the very end of season 1. During this sad moment, we got to learn more about this goddess. During her final moments, she was corrupted by the Demon Blight (a contamination that turns a goddess into a dangerous form). To prevent this from happening, Xylo had to kill her, which he did out of mercy and most of all, duty. This was the reason he was named a "goddess killer" and was sentenced to be a penal hero, and forced to fight on the front lines.

Senerva's powers are a bit confusing. They involve the summoning of otherworldly constructs, such as big towering spires or massive fortresses that could reshape the battlefield. Senerva is known as the "Goddess of Fortress", which reflects her domain power.

During her final moments she exhausted herself from overdoing this ability, which ultimately led to her life being ended. As with other goddesses, Senerva also requires praise and pats on her head from her knight.

Pelmery - Goddess of Poison

Pelmery, the goddess of poison, is the ninth goddess in the Sentenced to be a hero series. She is contracted to Hord Clivios, who is the captain of the Ninth Order of Holy Knights.

Pelmery's powers centres around poison. She can generate poisons to create lethal fields and even give her knights the ability to resist toxins. She can also control and shape poisons such as creating traps or weapons imbued with toxins. This ability allows her to assist her allies indirectly, such as contaminating big areas or neutralising threats without being confronted. Ultimately, she is the complete powerhouse, even rivaling the master over the sword domain, Teoritta.

Pelmery was first introduced in episode 5 titled "Sentence: Defense Against Corruption at Mureed Fortress 1". She was shown during the Mureed Fortress defence arc as Xylo was returning to the fortress after preparing for the next operaion. Then he was stopped by Hord Clivios, along with Pelmery by his side. This interaction was interesting, we got to see the goddess of poison, and she is everything her name suggests.

Pelmery has a very distinctly poisonous appearance. Her hair seems almost stuck together, and her expression carries a calm, yet toxic aura that sets her apart from other goddesses. This look is uniquely hers and creates an opposite effect to that of the playful, lively demeanor of another goddesses like Teoritta. Despite her intimidating aura, the core personality trait of all goddesses, such as craving praise is still evident. During her interaction with Xylo, Pelmery asks Hord, "Was I useful in this mission? If you can, could you please say those words, ‘Well done’?" Hord then obliges, then pats her on the head.
