Witch Hat Atelier is finally being adapted into an anime. This isn't just any ordinary series, this series is one of the biggest Fantasy manga around. With over 7 million copies in circulation as of late 2025, it's easy to see why this series is getting an anime adaptation, and with how the story is written, its easy to see why so many people love it.

In this article I will explain everything about Witch Hat Atelier, such as the magic, plot, lore and much much more.

"Witch Hat Atelier" The meaning behind the name

The name "Witch Hat Atelier" perfectly reflects the core themes of the series. The main theme focuses on witches, not wizards. In this world everyone who uses magic is called a Witch. The Hat symbolises the identity of a witch because it's a symbol of their training and completion. For example, a certain style of hat can actually represent the level of mastery. Not that there is some kind of ranking system. Rather, after a witch completes their apprenticeship, their hats change from a simpler one to a more custom one.

I've always found these fresh ideas to add another layer to the story. While hats don't necessarily play a huge role in the story, they are important for a variety of reasons. When an apprentice starts out, they start with a simple hat, but as they gain more knowledge or pass more tests (The Pentagram Tests) their hat changes, not magically, but the apprentice's mentor gives them a new one, or they design their own one.

On the other hand a hat can also represent the bad side of a witch. In this world there are 2 types of witches. Firstly is the normal ones, who are referred to as "Pointed cap witches" that follow the laws and rules, which is not to use forbidden magic, and to not tell outsiders how magic actually works. Then the second type of witch is called "The brimmed cap witches", who wear a distinct hat that is wide and obstructs the face. These witches reject the rules of magic. in short, they defy the safely structured system of magic and prefer being lawless.

Atelier refers to the work place where an apprentice is trained under a mentor. These names "Witch Hat Atelier" fits perfectly together and brings both themes into one name.

Witch Hat Atelier's Plot

Witch Hat Atelier is easily one of the best fantasy mangas I've read, and it's easy to see how so many people fell in love with it. The story follows a young girl named Coco, who's biggest dream is to use magic. Since the beginning of the series, you really get hooked into her story. She's an orphan who's parents died when she was at a very young age. However, magic and her love for it kept her moving forward, even though she was told that one must be born a witch to perform magic.

One day, she meets a witch, but this was not any ordinary witch, rather one of the bad ones who are called "the brimmed hats". He gives her a book with images of circles and a wand with a pen tip. However, she did not fully understand yet that magic does not come from the human, rather through magic circles.

Later a Witch arrives named Qifrey, who introduces himself as a real witch. While doing magic, Coco sees him drawing magic circles and realises "this is the way magic is done." Knowing this, she goes and finds the book she was given at a younger age and casts a forbidden spell by accident which turns her guardian mother to stone or in a frozen like state.

Qifrey then takes her as his apprentice to help her learn more about magic and to become a full witch in order to save her mom.

Magic Explained

Unlike many other Fantasy anime, or even Fantasy in general, magic in this world does not act the same way. In Witch Hat Atelier, the author decided to take a different approach, and to be honest, this original idea makes the series that much better. Instead of a witch casting magic with an innate ability, anyone can use magic simply by drawing a circle with a magic sigil. However, saying "everyone" can cast, is a bit of an exaggeration. Drawing magic circles to cast magic requires skill, precision and most of all knowledge.

Specific spells are created by drawing precise magic circles using a special ink and of course knowledge of what you are drawing. This concept was clear from the start of the series, where Coco, the main protagonist, finds Quifrey drawing a circle. This to me was one of the best introductions to magic we could've gotten.

Spells are created by joining specific runes and symbols inside a carefully drawn circle. If the circle is slightly skew, the spell will not work or it would work in a different way. For example, the witch draws a specific rune that will call upon fire, but if the rune/sigil or circle is more squarish or longer on one end, it could cause the fire to be smaller or larger.

Special Ink That Enables The Magic

The special ink that is used enables the magic to activate, but it's not the magic itself. This ink comes from a rare tree called a Silverwood trees, and is basically a magic tree. The ink comes from a substance called woodcruor, which is extracted from this tree's branches that have dried up or withered.

The ink is also commonly referred to as "the blood of the tree", this ingredient can also be mixed with others to have special properties for example, waterproofing, being invisible, or even longer duration.

Special Brush For The Ink

The wand is just as important as the ink. These wands have a brush tip on them which can be used to dip into the ink and can come in many different forms such as special pens that are used for everyday drawing on paper, tougher wands for hard surfaces and even custom ones that can make drawn seals permanent. These wands can help the witch draw more smoothly, but the real magic activates using the ink even though the pen is just as important.

Main Characters

Witch Hat Atelier focuses on a small group of main characters, with Coco and Qifrey being the two most important. An atelier is like a special workshop or studio like place where a mentor, in this case Qifrey, trains young apprentices. So there are about six main characters that live here: Qifrey (the maentor), Olruggio (his friend who helps watch over things), and the four apprentices: Coco, Agott, Tetia, and Richeh. The atelier is in a quiet, beautiful spot on the Zozah Peninsula: east-northeast of the witch town Kalhn and north-northwest of Coco's old village.

Qifrey

Qifrey is a highly skilled and experienced witch, who has completed all the tests (Pentagram Tests). Although his background is largely a mystery at this point, its clear that he has spent the majority of his life mastering the arts of magic and most importantly, understanding the rules and laws that govern it. This is the reason why he is so strict about teaching apprentices to draw magic circles perfectly.

Qifrey's background also involves encountering the dangers of forbidden magic, which is why he was so adamant on finding the people behind it (the brimmed hats). Although he has a calm demeanour about him, he is aggressively dedicated to protecting young witches especially Coco. While the story unfolds, more details about his background will show.

But if there's one thing we can speculate on, it's that his past is filled with secrets that suggest he has faced serious threats and losses because of forbidden magic. This is on top of the fact that he is afflicted with a Silverwood parasite growing where his eye used to be, which threatens his remaining vision and life.

Coco

Coco is the main focus of this series. She is a bright and mostly curious girl who's biggest dream is to become a witch. Over the course of the series she becomes much more skilled compared to when we first see her in the anime. Her skill with magic circles and knowledge expand a lot.

Her main goal at the beginning of the series is to reach the Tower of Tomes which is a massive library rumoured to hold the most advanced and complicated magical knowledge, including forbidden spells. She needs access to this knowledge because the magic she accidentally cast on her guardian must be fully understood in order to safely reverse it.

The only way to gain entry to the Tower of Tomes is by successfully completing the Pentagram Tests, which apprentices take to deepen their magical knowledge and advance toward becoming full witches.

Why Witch Hat Atelier Stands Out

Witch Hat atelier is the most fun I've had reading a manga in a long time. This anime will surely be one for the books, because not only does it adapt a masterpiece of a story, but it also has animation to match it.

The anime is being adapted by Bug Films, who you may also know for the works of Zom 100: Bucket list of the dead. During the teaser trailer for season 1, you can really see the effort they put into it. It reminds me of Frieren, only with its own original story.

For example, Frieren focuses on an elf who has lived for over a thousand years, and the magic is from within, while Witch Hat Atelier focuses on the growth aspect of becoming a witch and the magic isn't from within, rather it's summoned through magic circles.

Some even contribute this series to the big 3 of fantasy anime, that is Frieren, Delicious in a Dungeon and obviously now Witch Hat Atelier. So, if you like a series like Frieren you will love this story. It blends an original story with a slice of life that brings you into a full world of magic and fantasy.
