Clevatess takes a surprisingly dark approach to the fantasy genre, but the story isn't the only thing that makes the series stand out. The Dark Beasts themselves are some of the strangest and most terrifying creatures in the world of Clevatess.

Clevatess isn't your typical fantasy anime. Alongside its dark story and powerful characters, the series features some incredibly strange creatures, from enormous dragons to bizarre Dark Beasts. Here are seven of the weirdest and most terrifying creatures we've seen so far.

7. The Northern Dragon

The Northern Dragon is a powerful dragon that lived in the Dragon’s Snowfield and served as a guardian of Vordein, who is the Dark Beast Lord of the North who also resembles a dragon.

It was considered an extremely dangerous creature, and defeating it was a major achievement that earned Dorel his reputation as the Dragon Slayer. You know, that guy from the very end of season 1 who basically solves every problem by punching it until it stops moving.

In terms of appearance, the Northern Dragon has a huge, imposing reptilian body covered in scales, with a distinctly traditional dragon-like appearance. It has a large head, powerful jaws, prominent horns, massive wings, and a long, muscular body and tail. Its overall design makes it look more like a classic Western dragon than the more bizarre and monstrous forms taken by some of the Dark Beast Lords.

6. Clevatess

Having the main protagonist on this "Weirdest Dark Beasts list", that's kind of weird for a protagonist, right? While we normally see his human disguise "Klen", his true form is much more terrifying.

However, he's not as bad as many of the others: by bad, I mean not as weird-looking. Clevatess' natural form looks like a fox with bright glowing fur, three horns and many dark shadow tails. While he's not the most terrifying to look at, his immense power makes up for that. At times he can be very intense and intimidating - especially that overarching red eyes stare.

5. Vordein

Vordein is a massive dragon-like Dark Beast who is covered in battle scars, but here's where the weird part comes in: the additional eyes. Those definitely make him more intimidating. However, compared to some of the other Dark Beasts, his design is actually fairly familiar. He looks like what you would expect from an ancient, powerful dragon from a fantasy world, rather than something completely unnatural or difficult to comprehend. The eyes scattered all over his body is what truly makes him unique in that respect.

His appearance is terrifying because of his size, scars, and monstrous features such as the eyes, but it isn't necessarily unsettling in the same way as some of the stranger Dark Beast designs. That's why I'd place Vordein in the 5th spot on a list of the most terrifying true forms.

4. Laswell

Coming in at my number four spot, we have Laswell, the Dark Beast Lord of the East. Laswell is easily one of the most mysterious of the four Dark Beast Lords, and that mystery is probably the biggest part of what makes him so terrifying. He rules over the Sladan Seas and like the other Beast Lords, is an ancient Dark Beast capable of transforming between different forms.

We did get a look at him in Season 2 where he was introduced, but not in some big magnificent way, rather through Edison who he possessed to get into the academy. He appeared as a sort of squid-like monster, but according to lore this isn't his true form.

Now this is the interesting part. What makes Laswell stand out to me is that his appearance doesn't immediately scream at you that it's a terrifying monster. Instead, there is something rather unsettling about not really knowing what his true form looks like and what this ancient Beast Lord is truly capable of.

He's one of the Four Lords for a reason, and his reputation alone makes him feel like something you definitely wouldn't want to encounter. That's why I think Laswell deserves the number four spot on this list.

3. Zavthier

Now we have Zavthier, the Dark Beast Lord of the West. Zavthier is one of the four Dark Beast Lords, and unlike some of the others, there is something really weird about her appearance. Zavthier's name title also implies something mysterious. She goes by Zavthier of Ghosts or Zavthier of the Mist.

She undoubtedly looks like a Dark Beast, but I wouldn't say her design is the most terrifying we've seen so far. There are some strange and unnatural features to her appearance that make her stand out. She has a really strange-looking true form, with a pale, fleshy body, an unnatural shape, and strange features across her body. She usually appears in a slender and elegant humanoid form, reflecting her role as the mistress of illusions and mists. Ethereal wings also emerge from her ankles.

2. Gart

At number 2 we have Gart who is actually Zavthier's servant. While he isn't one of the Dark Beast Lords, he definitely still deserves a spot on this list because his appearance is one of the more strange ones out there.

He has an almost deformed appearance or a mixture of sorts, which kind of does put him in your typical fantasy story. His true form resembles a giant eagle beast with sharp talons and huge wings. However, even though he's not one of the Dark Beast Lords, he can still take on a humanoid appearance and is introduced in the first season.

1. Betty

Despite another character not being one of the dark beast lords, this one looks considerably different in their true form. Betty is a bizarre troll-like being with a massive body, monstrous features, and weird proportions that make her stand out among many other magic beasts in the series and honestly I think the first season pulled off her "majestic side" perfectly. She is native to the western regions, a place known for its formidable magical beasts.

Underneath this weird appearance is also something far more dangerous! She's shown to be capable of carrying out some pretty brutal tasks for Vroko, who is a magician and a ruthless leader who manipulates people with his magic. While her role in the story isn't as large as some of the other beasts, Betty's design alone is enough to make her memorable.

Bonus Terrifying Entities

The Orggites

The Orggites are one of the five humanoid races in Clevatess rather than a single character. These are described as a strong ogre-like race who are dwelling in the forest. They are skilled at hunting and natural medicine. They have a large, muscular, almost oni-like build, which gives them more of a beastly appearance.

Editor's Thoughts

Clevatess has always been a favorite for me! But I got to admit, I didn't start with the books, rather I started with the anime and it instantly captivated me in this world. While it's not one of those flashy anime with the modern aesthetics, the oldish looking animation really brings this story to life. The dark beasts and especially the main protagonist being one of the evil characters, similar to Overlord, makes the story that much better. It doesn't stick to the typical hero or good guy, and actually feels original! — Dean
