All Dark Beasts in Clevatess Explained

Every anime needs an overarching enemy, especially in the dark fantasy genre. This sets humanity against an opposing foe and I'm not going to lie, Clevatess pulls this classical trope off fantastically. The world of Clevatess is filled with dark themes and enemies, but the dark enemies aren't all tied together and actually oppose each other to some extent most of the time.

In fact, the Dark Beasts that surround the humanoid kingdoms of Edthea form a complex hierarchy rather than a single united force as we see in almost every other story - especially when it comes to manga or anime. While the terrifying lesser beasts constantly threaten humanity’s borders, the true power lies with the Four Lords of the Dark Beasts, namely the immortal rulers of the North, South, East, and West who often pursue their own agendas.

All Dark Beasts in Clevatess

Dark beasts in Clevatess are formidable monsters who dominate and lead certain borders surrounding the humanoid kingdoms. These beasts range from lesser more savage beasts to near god like entities. They have also kept the humanoids trapped on that middle continent for a very long time. This prevents the humanoids from exploring and expanding into the unknown.

Clevatess - Dark Beast Lord of the South

Clevatess is our main protagonist of this story and the ruler of the southern borderlands and is the beast of moonlight. His true form is a massive fox like demonic creature with glowing fur, horns and multiple shadow tails. He also possesses godlike power as we see him defeating the chosen heroes effortlessly and destroyed the entire kingdom of hiden in a single night. This happened at the beginning of the season during that one hour first episode that introduced us to the series, which was hype all the way through.

What's really interesting is that Clevatess actually isn't the original beast of the south, rather he inherited it about a thousand years before the main story even begins. This would make him the youngest demon beast lord out of the 4. For most of those years he remained in isolation and having very little interest in the kingdoms as long as they stayed out his territory

Vordein - Dark Beast Lord of the North

Vordein - Dark Beast Lord of the North clevatess

Vordein is the dark beast lord of the North and is also known as the King of dragons and rules the snowy dragons snowfield north of Eslinn and unlike Clevatess, he is the oldest and the most powerful of all the dark beast lords. He has the form of a large dragon with a lot of battle scars and is covered with extra eye.

He is also known to create gecko familiars from his dark blood, manipulate fire and even use dark sorcery. He can also act through other people for example we hear his voice in the first season when he talks through General Dorel. This means he is a powerful and more importantly, a cunning beast lord who makes up schemes from the shadows.

Zavthier - Dark Beast Lord of the West

Zavthier - Dark Beast Lord of the West clevetess

Zavthier, who is also known as Zavthier of the Mist, is the Dark Beast Lord of the West. Zavthier is the only female out of all the Dark Beast Lords and rules the Great Western Forest, where forest-dwelling Orggites worship her as a god

She typically has an elegant and slender humanoid form with wings that sprout from her ankles, although her true form still remains unknown. She is a master of illusions and mist manipulation and can cloak her entire territory in a dense fog, which we see a fragment of during Season 2 when Clevatess built a large mountain to draw the enemy out while Alicia was being kept underground by the enemy.

Now, unlike most other Dark Beasts, she has shown curiosity and benevolence towards the humanoids who revere her and mostly acts as their protector. However, the one thing that led to her more extreme hostility is when she believed humans might be responsible for the disappearance of Dark Beast younglings.

Laswell - Dark Beast Lord of the East

Laswell is the dark beast lord of the east and rules the eastern regions linked to the sladan seas and the slada people of Esthea. The interesting part is that out of all the dark beast lords, Laswell is the most mysterious one because of the limited details revealed about him.

He possess a colossal form that more resembles an ancient sea monster and like the other beast lords is capable of shapeshifting. He also once killed by a true hero but later was reborn. In short his specific powers remain largely unknown.

Editors Thoughts

I'm not going to lie, when I first watched Clevatess I thought "hmm, its okay, but could be better". after the ending of season 1 that thought was gone as it ended on a high note. Season 2 was even better with its school theme and Clevatess and Alicias bond becoming even stronger.

The story centered around all these dark beasts feel like a wholesome original idea. We have kingdoms against the dark beasts, dark beasts against dark beasts and dark beasts allying with the humans. There's no true good place or true bad person. The themes shown really fit down that alley if you into the dark fantasy and it's not too dark where you would call it a horror or not too light where you'd simply call it a fantasy its a mix of the best of both. Truly a masterpiece when you look at the picture as a whole. — Dean
