Overgeared is a story that has the potential to dominate all other game Virtual reality & isekai out there, and yes, I'm talking about even Sword Art Online and Shangri-La Frontier. This is a popular Korean manhwa (webtoon) that was adapted from a long-running web novel of the same name. This story features Shin Youngwoo, sounds familiar, right? It instantly reminded me of Sung Jinwoo from Solo Leveling.

However, don't let the names fool you. Overgeared is a completely different story with its own characters, progression system, and how the world works, so no copy and paste here, it's simply a coincidence. In fact, this novel was first published in 2014, years before Solo Leveling.
Overgeared Story Explained: What Is the Anime Actually About? (Spoiler Free)

This story follows someone I would call an "underdog". Not in the game but in life in general. He's an unlucky person who is drowning in debt and scrapes by in the real world on hard labor. Now while some think this story will follow the typical game isekai sort of anime (using isekai as a referance. This is not an isekai) where the person in the game starts off very different to his real-world situation, that isn't really the case in this one.
However, even in the game under the alias of "Grid", he thinks he's a loser. In fact, he is constantly mocked until something super rare in the game happens and he discovers a rare book titled "Pagma's Rare Book", which transforms him into the first-ever legendary class player in the game (the game's title is "Satisfy").
With this book, he becomes Pagma's successor, who is a master blacksmith capable of forging even god-tier equipment. The downside to this after equipping it, he becomes level one again, but the stats work completely differently this time around. But you might be thinking, what is the name "Overgeared" about? Well, he can now simply equip items that are much higher level than him.
The Virtual Game World Isn't What You Think It Is

The story takes place in a virtual reality MMORPG, a genre of anime where players enter a video game through advanced virtual reality technology. Instead of simply playing the game through a screen, the players are able to physically enter the virtual world and experience it almost as if they were actually there.
Most anime we watch that has these game systems intact (Shangri La Frontier is the perfect example) is largely created by a certain organization or the character is instantly isekai’d to that game without much explanation why. This story takes a more realistic and honestly best approach to this medium.

The game that these players go into is actually a true living world rather than a scripted one made by a big organization. Meaning it's governed by a company, but is truly handled by a quantum supercomputer known as Morpheus. After knowing this I honestly felt more engaged in the story because who wants a scripted story that another human knows what's going to happen, right?
This ultimately means that the player makes his own journey and each interaction with NPC's form its own unique stories. One of the billions of players will not get the same quest as anyone else, and if a certain NPC gets arrested for example, they will be arrested on everyone else's side as well. So the game is ever evolving based on the players decisions. There is no customer service resets and no hand holding tutorials. The NPC's also display emotions, memory and loyalty to the players behaviours and decisions. This makes the story feel alive in its very own way.
How the Story Progresses

The ultimate goal in this story was for Grid to survive and make enough money to improve his miserable real life, but as the story progresses, it grows into more than just that. At the start, the goal was to make money and obtain rare gear, but later on, it becomes about building strong bonds with other players, and he becomes involved with guilds and kingdoms.
What I love most about it is also that the story isn't straightforward. It evolves and becomes something entirely different as it goes on, and it's truly not one thing or another, but rather an ever-evolving storyline where the main protagonist goes through life stages, if you will.
Editor's Thoughts
If I'm being honest, I dived into this story before the anime arrived to pick up a sense of what it's all about, and I was honestly surprised at what I found. It has a strong hook from beginning to end, and the pacing isn't slow at all. It starts off showcasing the power very briefly. I love it because of the world-building, strong bonds with other characters, and the idea of something original. The creator found a way to make a simple crafting job overpowered. With the series' fantastic themes and just the overall tone of it, this is turning into a masterpiece, and what's even more exciting is we're only just getting started! — Dean
