Sentenced to be a Hero Season 1 has officially ended its first season run on Crunchyroll, and the studio just surprised us with some great news! Season 1 ended on a huge cliff-hanger with Patausche Kivia being sentenced to become a hero. Not only did this ending give us a cliff-hanger, it also gave us some lore regarding the first goddess who's the one behind the hero summoning.

Season 2 is set to change a lot of things because the studio gave us something to look forward to and this comes straight after the first season aired, which only tells us one thing, Season 1 was a big success. This does not surprise me at all! After all, I was hooked from beginning to end.
Sentenced to Be a Hero Season 2: Trailer, Release Date & Announcement
Today during the Anime-Japan event some huge news broke out about Sentenced to Be a Hero. However, some of us were expecting this because of the seasonal hype for the sleeper hit series and mainly because of the leaked announcement that a new season was green-lit for production.
Today at the Anime-Japan event, it was announced that season 2 is officially in production. This means Studio KAI, who is the studio behind season 1, will once again return to create another masterpiece of a series (especially that insane animation).
An announcement trailer was also released and features key moments from the first season, but unlike many other confirmation trailers, this one actually includes a preview of the next season.
The trailer does pick out a key moment from the first season's finale where Patausche Kivia gets sentenced to be a hero. The ending of this trailer showcases that hype, it states "Put your faith in the goddess and die." This is referring to the very first goddess which season 1's ending gives us a bit more lore on.
The first goddesses ability is the summon warriors from other worlds, however over time her powers waned and now she can bring back current humans and resurrect them, ultimately giving them the title as heroes.

The ending of the first season describes the heroes as something other than criminal, but a lot wasn't teased about that, so I'm really hoping we will learn much more in the next season.
The very end of this video showcases that season 2 has been confirmed and is in production. Just a side note: I suggest you watch the trailer above, the music is insanely good!
A New Visual Image Confirmation

The studio didn't just stop with the new PV trailer, we also got a beautiful looking visual image which showcases Xylo and Teoritta walking in snow toward mountains in the far distance. This seems to tease the new season will take them into a new land where our main protagonist will once again face off against the demon blight.
I wonder where their adventures will take them? If season 1 is any precedent for the future of the series, I'm almost certain that the new season will give us that and more!

When Can We Expect a New Season

While new series aren't always set in stone and some of the time they don't always follow a pattern, even though some of us expect it to. A new season could potentially be made within a year, but again this is purely speculation.
Anime typically can be made within a year to a year and a half and with this new season having the green light, we could potentially see a new season later 2027 or even early 2028. It's also hard to give a more exact speculated date because we only have one season. If we had more we could see a better pattern.
Additionally we also got some comments from the author:
I'm so excited to see the amazing work of the anime staff once again. As a viewer, I'm really looking forward to it. I have no doubt that it will exceed my expectations. To express this joy to the fullest, I'm going to go eat a special ramen set right now.

Editor's Thoughts

Where do I start with this, so much happened. Anime have for the most part been generic for me lately. Now and then we do eventually get an anime that doesn't stick to the rules and has original content. Sentenced to Be a Hero is such an anime.
The originality of the story is in my opinion why it's considered a sleeper hit. Don't get me wrong, the animation adds a lot to its success, but the story and the emphasis on the heroes title as a criminal, makes the story stand out. On top of this, there's not a lot of fan service which sometimes clouds the main focus of a series.
In this series we see the focus heavily on the penal unit, not just the main protagonist. This type of story gets us hooked because we don't know where it's going. There's a cinematic experience to it where we think it's going one direction and out of nowhere, it hits you with the huge plot twist. And yes, I know what you're thinking, that ending right?
Season 1 wrapped up on a serious twist. Patausche Kivia gets sent to prison and has a choice to become a hero. We also get to see the new goddess and the backstory on how heroes are created. This was the perfect note to end the story and all I can say is "Wow, season 2 can't come fast enough!"
Luckily we might not have that much longer to wait, hopefully we see it in 2027, but till then this is definitely an anime I will binge for sure again later on. — Dean
