Chloe Aubert (Chronoa) Fully Explained – Reincarnated as a Slime

Chloe Aubert starts off as one of the lesser side characters in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime and eventually becomes a spotlight later on. This series did a complete 360 on all of us and it was beautiful.

From a shy timid girl struggling in a harsh world to one of the most loved figures in the series. Chloe truly shines later on, especially with her undying loyalty to Rimuru and overwhelming strength, not only on the battlefield, but through her determination to see Rimuru survive.
Chloe is actually Chroano!
Chloe is originally a summoned Otherworlder, well that's what it appears to be on the surface when we first meet her during the early episodes. Chloe is actually a legendary Chosen Hero known as Chronoa, who is a time-traveling figure with an insane amount of power and is also the hero that sealed Veldora 300 years in the past. Veldora tells the story and we see flashes of her wearing a mask.
However, something we don't know yet is that she is more than just a single soul. We see hints of this, but it's not really stated in Season 1 Episode 23 titled "Saved Souls". I mean, I guessed this was just some strong hero from the past. During the spirit summoning when Rimuru saves Shizu's students by merging their souls with spirits, a mysterious figure in white appears and kisses Rimuru and then merges with Chloe's body to stabilize her. That woman is Chloe's future self, Chronoa.
The sad moment Chloe became Chronoa
Chloe technically becomes Chronoa because of her strong love and will to protect Rimuru. This is because Rimuru doesn't die once, but many times and left Chloe heartbroken. It's hard to think that our overpowered protagonist Rimuru Tempest was actually being guided this entire time. This is a sad emotional arc in the Light Novel and honestly brought a tear to my eye.
But to really get into the deep rooted cause of how Chloe became Chronoa, we need to dive deep to the moment it all changed. During one of those bad timelines after Rimuru died, Hinata actually died as well and her soul merged with Chloe's and awakened Chloe's hidden power to time travel. This power sent both of them (Chloe and Hinata) back 2000 years and they lived as the masked hero called Chronoa who sealed Veldora.
This is the sad part. In almost all of those past events during the time loop, Rimuru kept dying or ended up in serious danger. This led Chloe to keep going back in time to change the events, creating a time loop of sorts. This happened not just 1 or 2 times but countless times until Chloe and Hinata became stronger and damaged by the emotion after trying to see Rimuru survive, which led to Hinata naming Chloe "Chronoa" (meaning related to time) but this was to hide her real name from Leon who was Chloe's Friend when she was younger.
Is Chloe and Hinata the Same Person When They Become Chronoa?
The answer is simply no. After the two emerge, Hinata's soul lives inside Chloe's body and instead of acting as one entity, Hinata acts more like a partner or an inner voice, similar to Raphael and Rimuru. Which means they share the same body, with Hinata sometimes taking control. However, Chloe remains the main soul and personality. For a good example if we look at that time Rimuru was fighting the orc lord, Raphael was able to control Rimurus body while Rimuru became the assistant.

Now the interesting part is that Chronoa actually becomes a separate ego or personality of sorts later on. Think of this entity "Chronoa" as a skill like Raphael or Great Sage. This was largely created from many future memories, emotions, and deep pain during the time loops. So let's think of this now as 3 entities in the current timeline. Chloe and Chronoa eventually integrate more fully into one complete being while Hinata is revived separately and does not stay merged with Chronoa.
Ultimately, after merging souls, Hinata and Chloe were two entities in Chloe's body with Chloe being in control. After countless time loops, a new sort of entity emerged as an ego-like entity or a special skill like Raphael/Ciel. However, in the current successful timeline, Chloe emerges with that ego entity and they become one (adult Chloe). Rimuru extracts Hinata's consciousness from Chronoa and is then revived so her soul comes back to her body, making Chronoa and Chloe one person, obviously with Chloe in control and Chronoa acting as support like Raphael/Ciel.

The Successful Timeline
The successful timeline in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime refers to the current one in the main story. This one comes after roughly 2,000 years of looping back as the hero.
In the previous failed timelines and during almost all the iterations, Rimuru did not fully evolve into the Demon Lord or True Demon Lord he is today, because he lacked the necessary preparations and power.

For example, when the Eastern Empire invaded, Rimuru would head out to confront the threat but he would always die during that battle. This led to the collapse of the monster federation and soon after Veldora would go on a rampage, destroying countries and cities.
In this successful timeline Rimuru becomes a Demon Lord and with Hinata's stronger bonds, this allows Chloe to get more willpower. Chronoa manifests as a completely separate entity and evolves into a full Manas, obviously with the help of Raphael/Ciel, and merges permanently with Chloe.
Ultimately this is the good ending loop that Chloe fought so hard and endlessly to achieve. Rimuru meets Veldora in the cave after Chronoa sealed him previously. Rimuru goes to the village, becomes a Demon Lord, then eventually a True Dragon. This is all thanks to Chloe who could not bear the thought of losing him and travelled back in time countless times to make sure he survives. Editor's Thoughts
Wow, what a story this is! The author really cooked from the beginning to the end. Writing this post really reminded me again how good this story truly is and just how deep it goes. Who would have thought that one of the main figures would be a shy timid girl that Rimuru met. Then later on in the series we get hit with a plot twist that Rimuru only got to where he is because of this little girl, who couldn't live in a world without Rimuru.
Honestly, this brings a tear to my eye. So ultimately Rimuru's decisions weren't his own which really plays a twist on things and this is what makes this story stand out so much. We have this twist, we have the insanely good world building, it's an isekai, and the main protagonist is OP and becomes even stronger over time. What more could we ask for? Truly one of the best stories ever told in my opinion! — Dean
