Underrated Isekai Anime With Overpowered Protagonists You’ve Probably Overlooked

Isekai has always dominated the entire anime field especially with the big players like one of my personal favorite ones: That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime for example. But there are actually other good isekai out there, some you've probably overlooked, maybe because it wasn't as hype or highly marketed like the bigger ones.

Underrated isekai anime with overpowered protagonists seems like a stale or overflooded genre but trust me these ones are truly the hidden gems and I have no doubt you will love every second of them. I also find myself rewatching these constantly on occasion, which makes it the perfect series, not those one and done ones.

Black Summoner

Black Summoner follows a story of a protagonist named Kelvin who reincarnates into a fantasy world. However, unlike the normal isekai trope that the MC has all memories intact, this time the MC trades all his memories for powerful abilities. He becomes a summoner with the goddess Melfina as his first follower and guide in this world. This is a fast-paced series and has a ton of satisfying fights.

This series is one of those that I tend to come back to after a couple of months simply because it's a non-thinking anime. It stands out in the Overpowered Protagonist trope because it's a protagonist who enjoys fighting. I think of him more as a battle junkie who actually wants to fight, not just some other stoic power fantasy like a person who endures pain, hardship, or misfortune without even complaining.

This one tends to just be pure fun and no seriousness, which is good to just kick back and watch. Another reason for its "hiddenness" is because it flew under the radar back in 2022 simply because that was a stacked season with many popular and returning anime coming out. So if you love overpowered protagonists who still earn their wins and build a team worth rooting for, this is exactly the kind of overlooked anime you need to check out.

The Fruit of Evolution: Before I Knew It, My Life Had It Made

The Fruit of Evolution: Before I Knew It, My Life Had It Made is an adaptation of the light novel by the same name and is centred around a bullied unpopular high schooler named Seiichi who is transported from his school to a game-like fantasy world. However, he is abandoned by all his classmates and in this new world he eats the fruit of evolution that completely changes his body, stats and abilities. This one feels very close to I Got a Cheat Skill in Another World, well at least the fundamentals of that show.

After the very first episode you get a rough hang on what the story is about. It feels like an unhinged self-aware comedy and what's great about this one is the love interest. The series doesn't hold a lot of emphasis on that, but it doesn't feel like other common fan service. While it does include quite a bit of it, it's bearable. This is just one of those series you can turn your brain off and watch as the series unravels.

The reason for being underrated is mainly due to its low budget and people sometimes dismiss it as a generic anime. While that might be true, it's still a series you can watch and actually enjoy.

Parallel World Pharmacy

Looking for that healer type of anime? Well, this is the one for you. Parallel World Pharmacy is about a dedicated Japanese pharmacologist who works himself to death trying to create better medicines in memory of his passed away sister. He gets reincarnated as a young boy in a medieval like fantasy world where advanced medicine is nonexistent. However, armed with his vast knowledge of medicine and his special ability that lets him diagnose diseases instantly, he opens up a Pharmacy.

This series is up there with some of my favorite healing type or low battle anime. The realistic medicine approach this series has sets it apart from many others. The MC uses real pharmaceutical knowledge which is backed by actual medical consultants mixed with a unique divine blessing ability to diagnose diseases instantly. There's not much to say on it, it's just a pure hearted, good chill anime to watch.

Skeleton Knight in Another World

This is an anime that has the best potential of breaking out of that underrated zone in anime. Skeleton Knight in Another World revolves around a gamer who wakes up in a fantasy world with a max level avatar who is a huge skeleton knight in armor. However, he hides his unsightly skeleton appearance under his helmet and teams up with warriors and other companions to stumble into adventures to rescue damsels and fighting the worst evils out there.

This is another one of those that is easy to rewatch over and over. The reason for this is simply because of the main protagonist named Arc. While he is overpowered, he is also very chivalrous and a knight at heart. So unlike darker skeletons in other anime, this one has holy magic which sets it apart from others like Overlord for example.

The reason why this one isn’t widely known to a lot of people comes from the animation from lesser known studios, and at the time during the airing of season 1, there were much bigger titles on display. But it’s easily an anime that I would recommend to anyone.

Isekai Cheat Magician

Love an overpowered protagonist? How about two! Isekai Cheat Magician follows two high school best friends who get transported to a fantasy world, and like almost all isekai this world is full of monsters and magic. The two friends quickly discover they are overpowered and register as adventurers to take on fights and strong enemies.

This isekai is one of my favorites because of the dual protagonists. It adds an extra layer of connection to two characters instead of one. However, I’m still confused as to why this one was so underrated. It honestly has the potential to break out. According to some reviews, it’s because of low production value and low marketing, which makes sense because it is honestly a good chill anime to relax and watch.

My Isekai Life: I Gained a Second Character Class and Became the Strongest Sage in the World

My Isekai Life: I Gained a Second Character Class and Became the Strongest Sage in the World follows an overworked salaryman named Yuji Sano who is summoned to a fantasy world and starts with the weak Monster Tamer class. However, by gaining friendship with a huge army of slimes he absorbs magical knowledge and gains a second class called Sage, becoming one of the strongest people alive.

The reason why this isekai was underrated or lesser known is simply because of the massive wave of isekai that was released in 2022. As we see very regularly with underrated anime, the studios are lesser known and send out generic looking promo material during marketing. However, under all that sits a charming anime full of cute, good, and surprising moments. It’s an anime that doesn’t take things too seriously and leans into the relaxed section of anime with low drama and more monster-friendly relations. This makes it the perfect comfort food isekai that is also good for rewatching later on.

Failure Frame: I Became the Strongest and Annihilated Everything With Low-Level Spells

Failure Frame: I Became the Strongest and Annihilated Everything With Low-Level Spells revolves around a high schooler named Mimori Touka who gets transported to another world with his classmates. While most of them get tested and receive high ranks, he is left with the failure E rank. However, his seemingly useless condition is actually powerful because he can inflict ailments on his enemies.

This is an anime that you can just switch your brain off and relax to. However my one pain point with the series is the bad animation in a lot of scenes, which could be the reason why this series got overlooked. The aspect that sets it apart from others is the clever twist on the darker, more serious tone compared to other anime in this genre. The story skips a lot of the common harem fanservice and slavery cliches for a more focused story and journey. If the animation was perfect, the series would’ve likely been a top hit during the time of airing.

The World’s Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat

The World’s Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat is one of my all time favorite sleeper hits or underrated anime. It’s about a great assassin who gets reincarnated to defeat the hero who is destined to destroy the world. A goddess gives him a second chance as the son of an assassin family. His new reincarnation name is Lugh and he’s now armed with legendary skills and the modern knowledge of his previous world.

This is honestly one of my best isekai underrated shows out there simply because the story is good and the animation does just enough to push it to the mid tier. This series mixes cool worldbuilding such as assassin family politics and squabbles between nations. It has its fanservice but it’s not annoying in any way and actually makes sense in the larger picture as Lugh, the MC, meant for it to happen as a tactic.
