Villainess anime have been stealing the spotlight lately, from cunning masterminds to elegant anti-heroes. This niche genre has been a rising trend, and I often see myself coming back to them again and again, especially the villainess anime that break the usual Otome Isekai tropes. Even when some stories feel familiar, they still hit in all the right ways almost like a pure isekai where an overpowered protagonist gets reincarnated. For me personally, that Isekai would be That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime.

The Villainess genre is a must watch, so if you're curious about this rising niche, you're in the right place! In this article I’ll show you the 10 Villainess anime you must-watch. These are my personal favorites and I’m sure many of you will love every second of them. These are not ranked in any particular order, purely a top 10, so you will find a gem in here for sure.
From Bureaucrat to Villainess: Dad's Been Reincarnated

From Bureaucrat to Villainess: Dad's Been Reincarnated follows the story of a 52-year-old civil servant named Tondabayashi. He gets hit by a truck and is reincarnated as Grace Auvergne, the beautiful but doomed villainess but there's a twist, this is his daughter’s favorite otome game. However, he knows the game’s story and tries his best to play the role of a noble lady so he can safely complete the game and return to his family in the old world.
What sets this one apart for me from many others is the fact that this time it’s a male getting reincarnated into the villainess role. While other villainess series have the young female protagonist in the main spotlight, this one has a senior man reincarnated. This 52-year-old is a responsible dad and office worker, so old habits tend to always shine through.
Another unique aspect is that his wife and otaku daughter are watching his progress from the real world while his body lies in a coma. This adds warm family moments instead of dodgy fan service. This is a must-watch if you’re looking for something unique and original.
The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady

The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady is a yuri fantasy series, meaning it features a romance between two females. This wonderfully animated series features a magic filled world where magic reigns supreme. However, the princess Anisphia, who was reincarnated with memories of the modern Japan, can't use traditional magic and she renounced her claim to the throne to pursue magicology. This is the invention of magical tools and gadgets like a flying broom for example. One night after her brother breaks off his engagement to a noble lady named Euphyllia, to protect her from disgrace Anisphia takes her in as a live-in research assistant.
The big difference with this series compared to a lot of other villainess ones is that this time the villainess is not trying to avoid a bad end in an otome game. This one is proudly yuri-focused, as I mentioned earlier, a romance between 2 females and it also treats the whole aspect of reincarnation really lightly without heavy mechanics or doom avoidance. It's more light and fresh.

Why Raeliana Ended Up at the Duke's Mansion

Why Raeliana Ended Up at the Duke's Mansion is a popular web novel and now a popular anime adaptation in the otome isekai genre. The story follows a modern-day woman named Park Eunha, who dies and gets reincarnated as Raeliana. As in many villainess isekai stories, she is fated to be poisoned by her fiance early in the story to serve as one of the main plot points for the heroine. However, she knows about the novel's events and tries to avoid this death in strategic ways.
This one is one that I think many of you will love, especially if you're into that 'fated to be doomed' villainess trope. Instead of avoiding being hated by her fiance or the antagonist in this story, she cleverly blackmails people into doing things. However, this is a spoiler-free post so I won't go deeper into the blackmails, but I highly recommend you check it out for yourself. This series leans into manipulation and conspiracies, something that truly sets it apart.
The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen: From Villainess to Savior

The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen: From Villainess to Savior is an adaptation from a popular isekai light novel series that also includes a manga. This series follows a modern girl who is reincarnated as an eight-year-old royal Ivy, who is the crown princess and in this series is destined to become the sadistic final boss of an otome game. However, she sees her horrifying future of being a cruel tyrant, and her death at her little sister's hand, and decides to change her fated path.
In this story, instead of focusing on romance or that doomed death flag trope, this series prides itself on the royal power and the "heroism" of the main protagonists. Which means it has a more dramatic tone with stronger emphasis on the political side and more importantly large-scale salvation rather than the typical harem fanservice and comedy.
Doctor Elise: The Royal Lady with the Lamp

Doctor Elise: The Royal Lady with the Lamp this is a popular isekai web novel that focuses on Elise de Clorance who was a spoiled empress whose cruelty led to her execution. However she gets reborn on modern earth as Song Ji Hyun and atones for her past mistakes by becoming a brilliant surgeon. But after dying again in a plane crash she awakens back in her teenage royal body with all her medical knowledge intact, now she is determined to change her fate by healing the empire and reform their healthcare.

What sets this one apart is the fact that it's a medical drama series with genuine redemption through healing. Other villainess stories normally revolve around romance or death, this one focuses on the healing of the world and the country. Also this one involves a rare double reincarnation. This makes the character feel much more experienced because she has lived two lives.
I'm in Love with the Villainess

I'm in Love with the Villainess, this is another yuri light novel that was later adapted into an anime. The story follows an ordinary worker named Rei Ohashi who reincarnates into her favorite otome game as the heroine who is a commoner. However, instead of pursuing a prince, Rei becomes obsessed with a villainess named Claire François and is actively trying to win her heart.
So unlike many other villainess anime, this one tries to avoid getting the attention of the males. In this one the protagonist falls head over heels for the villainess. The story has lots of fun and banter, which doesn't take things too seriously.
Villainess Level 99: I May Be the Hidden Boss, But I'm Not the Demon Lord

Villainess Level 99: I May Be the Hidden Boss, But I'm Not the Demon Lord is a fun anime that flips the story once again. It follows a Japanese college student who reincarnates into a villainess named Yumiella Dolkness, who is the secret boss of the otome game. After reincarnating, she grinds her levels up like crazy using her rare gift of dark magic. However, she overdoes it and becomes Level 99 by the time she enters the magic academy, which makes her overpowered but more importantly, more suspicious. Because of her level, black hair, and dark magic, a lot of people start to suspect she is the Demon Lord.
So while most stories focus on avoiding bad endings or diving into romance, this one is a pure overpowered comedy, gamer-like anime. The protagonist genuinely treats this world like an MMO and grinds non-stop. It's a refreshing straightforward power fantasy, and personally these are my favorites. No thinking, just pure fantasy, battles, and of course an overpowered protagonist. What could be better?

I'm the Villainess, So I'm Taming the Final Boss

I'm the Villainess, So I'm Taming the Final Boss follows a girl whose fiancé, the crown prince, breaks up with her publicly to pursue the game's heroine. However, Aileen Lauren d'Autriche regains memories of her past life as a Japanese girl who played this very same game. Now she realizes the villainess is destined to die horribly at the hands of the final boss, the Demon King. So to avoid this bad ending, Aileen immediately sets out to tame Claude, the Demon King, by proposing marriage and winning his heart while also working to build peace between humans and demons.
What sets this one apart from others is that Aileen immediately tries to tame the final boss, the Demon King Claude. Instead of the usual stories that involve some type of harem, this is a genuine anime with heartfelt moments because of the uniting of humans and demons, while the protagonist also tries to build her own power through politics and business with genuine romance that doesn't feel overly pushed.

7th Time Loop: The Villainess Enjoys a Carefree Life Married to Her Worst Enemy!

7th Time Loop: The Villainess Enjoys a Carefree Life Married to Her Worst Enemy! is more of a fun villainess isekai time-loop anime. It follows Rishe Irmgard Weitzner who is a duke’s daughter who keeps getting her engagement publicly annulled and constantly dies at age 20 every time. This is usually due to some devastating battle. However after six time loops she masters various skills and enters her seventh life and catches the eye of the Crowned Prince Arnold Hein who is the same man who kills her in all her previous loops, and is the one who starts the war. This time he proposes marriage right away which pulls the story into an entirely new path.
So unlike most villainess stories, this one has time loops and the main protagonist's goal isn't simply revenge or power or even romance at first. She just wants a peaceful life and to live past her 20's. So unlike other villainess stories this one gives that vibe that the main protagonist has already done everything and now just wants to relax. She got all the skills because of the constant loops which makes her overpowered. This is one I recommend if you like the "protagonist is powerful" trope.
My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!

My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! is one of the more popular ones and deserves a spot on this list. It follows Katarina Claes, who is an ordinary Japanese girl who dies in an accident and reincarnates as the villainess of an otome game. However, determined to avoid the bad ending where she gets killed, Katarina uses her knowledge of the game to befriend the targets and rival characters instead of antagonizing them.
This series leans into the slice-of-life moments rather than those dramatic romantic tension and heavy drama scenes. More importantly, this is just filled with good humor, especially since Katarina is thick-headed and has tons of misunderstandings. She also has ridiculous survival methods and her targets fall for her harder the more she tries to avoid the fated outcome. It's a light series but is animated beautifully, and if you haven't seen it, I highly suggest you watch this one.
