Witch Hat Atelier Season 1 Release Date Announced + Exclusive footage

Published on March 7, 2026

Witch hat atelier season 1 release date

After years of anticipation, Witch Hat Atelier is finally making its anime debut, and I for one am really excited about this. The highly acclaimed original manga by Kamome Shirahama has sold over 7 million copies worldwide, and trust me, the series is well worth a read.

This new series is set to premiere as a TV anime in April 2026 on Crunchyroll and is being produced by Bug Films. While not a very popular studio, they are relatively new, as they were founded in September 2021 as a subsidiary of Twin Engine.

This series stands out in the overcrowded fantasy genre and is very often drawing comparisons with another great masterpiece, Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. Many fans believe it has the potential to rival or even surpass Frieren in quality and storytelling: it could even possibly claim the top spot on MyAnimeList once the adaptation airs, thanks to its breath taking animation, emotional depth, and innovative storytelling.

Release Date + New Trailer

[ENG SUB] Witch Hat Atelier – Official Trailer

Witch Hat Atelier will premiere on Crunchyroll starting April 6, 2026. Crunchyroll has confirmed it will simulcast the series worldwide outside of Asia (and in select other regions like North America, Europe, South America, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, and CIS) as it airs in Japan. The first episode is scheduled to drop on that date, with episodes releasing weekly thereafter during the Spring 2026 anime season.

We've also received a new trailer, and honestly, it looks almost too good to be true! Most of us have grown accustomed to studios highlighting their anime's best moments in trailers, only for the actual episodes to feel underwhelming once it has been released. However, that doesn't seem to be the case with this series. There have been roughly three trailers so far, and each one exceeds the quality of the previous, clearly showcasing the immense passion poured into the project.

I can't help but think "WOW, this really looks good". The details in the animation can clearly be spotted instantly, especially the scene when Qifrey shoots into the sky full of thunder with a sigil under his shoes. If this doesn't catapult Bug Films straight to the top tier of studios, I don't know what will.

A New Exclusive Clip From Episode 1

Witch Hat Atelier Special Sneak Peek

On February 26, the studio released a minute and 20 second clip from the first episode to showcase the animation. Everything here is flawless, from the fluid walking movements to the emotional passionate voice acting. And I got to say, one of my favourite characters, Coco, sounds really good, just as I pictured the voice while reading the manga!

Witch Hat Atelier's episode count hasn't been officially confirmed yet by sources like Crunchyroll, MyAnimeList, or even the production team. But with that said, the production on all episodes is reportedly complete. Which could mean a 24 episode run, because the series was reportedly in production since 2019.

As we can see, nearly every second features full on animation. There's no static shots or any glorified moving manga panels in sight. The immense effort poured into this preview is crystal clear and the studio should definately be proud ofwhat they have accomplished here.

Possibly the Best Anime of All Time?

What truly sets Witch Hat Atelier apart is its fresh and original take on magic. In this world, spells isn't some innate ability but intricate drawings that are skilfully drawn and crafted with ink and seals on special paper, blending creativity, discipline, and artistry.

This unique system feels like it elevates the series beyond the typical fantasy tropes and delivers a visually fantasy like experience that could redefine the genre.

With stunning trailers already generating massive hype, the adaptation promises to capture the manga's deep fantasy world-building and heartfelt coming-of-age journey. If it lives up to expectations, which I have no doubt it would, Witch Hat Atelier could become one of the defining anime of 2026 and beyond.

Editor's Thoughts

I have not been this excited for an anime in a very long time! My current favourites are Reincarnated as a Slime and Frieren, but this new series could possibly become my next big obsession, depending on how it's executed.

Like I said, I have no doubt it will truly be amazing. I've read the manga, which is where I first fell in love with this story, but seeing it brought to life in moving pictures could deepen my appreciation for it even more. The adaptation will depict the characters in ways that just can't be captured on the page, and I'm all here for it. After seeing all the hype surrounding this, my hopes are even higher for one really great story! — Dean
