In the beautiful world of Witch Hat Atelier, a witch isn't some rare person born with an innate ability or a "destiny" rather, it's just a normal human being. Yeah, that's right. No person in Witch Hat Atelier is some overpowered being with a powerful ability and honestly, it makes the series that much better, especially in this oversaturated genre.

To become a witch, they will need to enhance their skill with an ink pen and their knowledge of magic. In this world, anyone can become a witch because magic comes from carefully drawn glyphs and runes with a special ink only made from a certain tree. The Pointed Cap Witches, who are the "good ones," hide this fact to protect the world and the people in it.
For example, before the pact was formed (a new era where a certain few were named the pointed cap witches and hid the truth after removing everyone's memories), before that time, everyone cast magic and developed new but also forbidden spells that devastated the world and the people in it.
What Are the Five Pentagram Tests (Pentacle of Proving)
The five tests, also called the pentagram tests or pentacle of proving are the official trials that mark the journey of a witch from an apprentice to master of their own atelier. These tests are really important in a witch's journey because not only do they prove their skill and discipline, but also their independence as a witch officially. Ultimately it's all about growth and responsibility
Test 1: The Consent of the Crown

The Consent of the Crown is the very first test in Witch Hat Atelier and it basically serves as the gateway for all new apprentices. I remember seeing this first test in the manga and "WOW" it was amazing. Coco gets forced to partake in this test because of Agott. However, she passes with almost no knowledge of magic except for a few general things.
This test allows a person to become a formal apprentice once it has been completed. That means all apprentices have to go through this test in order to choose a mentor and in Coco's case, that's Qifrey.
The goal of this test is to climb to the top of the Dadah Mountain Range and harvest a rare crown-shaped Diadem Herb that exclusively grows there. The participants are only allowed to use their personally prepared magical components plus a maximum of three contraptions they brought from home.
Test 2: The Sincerity of the Shield

The Sincerity of the Shield is the second test in Witch Hat Atelier. This trial is meant to showcase their devotion in order to walk aside their teacher. This means they will need to prove their support and how they protect other without seeking their own glory or drawing attention to themselves. That's why this test involves caution and not being seen.

Passing this test will allow the apprentice to be able to use magic in public. The first test allowed them to choose their mentor. This is the next obvious step in their journey and it's a step above the previous one's objectives.
In this test the apprentice will need to go to the Serpentback Cave on Cape Romonon during the myrphons migration season. That would mean this test can't just simply be taken anytime like the previous one. The apprentice will need to wear a special mirror mantle that makes them appear to be a part of the flock of myrphons who look similar to penguins.
They must quietly guide a group of these pinguin looking birds to safety along the winding gravity defying cave with a hazardous pathway to their breeding grounds. The success of this test highly depends on patience and careful observation. This will also showcase their talent to not use magic in front of non-witches, and it showcases their talent to the officials, that they can be trusted to use magic discreetly.
Test 3: The Query of The Qui Vive

The third test is one of the more important ones, not because the others are less important, rather this one allows them to be eligible to challenge the Librarian trial at the Tower of Tomes.
This test is one of the reasons Coco decided to go on this witch journey because the Tower of Tomes holds all the knowledge of spells in the world and Coco needs to find the spell that she accidentally used and turned her mother to stone. Finding the right spell is the only way to reverse the effects.
This third test allows the apprentice to fully advance towards full qualification as a witch. The guiding principle of this trial is "the key shall come to one whose path is right" this emphasizes intentions and correct alignment with the ethical path of magic.

Unlike the previous tests that rely on a hands on approach this one functions as a judgement of character and evaluates an apprentice's path. However, the exact procedure isn't shown in exhaustive detail like the prior tests, but it functions as a gatekeeping assessment. Which means successfully passing grants them the "key" (symbolic permission) to challenge the separate Librarian's Trial at the Tower of Tomes.
Test 4: The Goodwill of Her Grace

This is the biggest test to pass in Witch Hat Atelier in order for an apprentice to become a full fledged witch. This trial's guiding principle is "one stands unaided when hope is realised". Ultimately this trial is about independence and self reliance.
This test allows the apprentice to graduate from the atelier and become a full fledged witch. While specific procedural details like the location, exact tasks, or even the challenges are not depicted in the early-to-mid story arcs compared to Tests 1 to 3, it still serves as a major milestone toward full witchhood.
Test 5: The Words of The Wise

while many witches decide to stop at test 4 because it's ultimately the end to becoming a witch, some of them like Qifrey for example, decide to take this final one to become a mentor and allows the witch to mentor apprentices.
The guiding principle of test 5 is "the teachings now come from thee", this means the successful witch is now qualified to pass on knowledge and accept apprentices under their own wing. This shifts from a learner to a teacher.
Like the previous one, no location or exact challenges have been depicted yet, but passing all 5 Tests completes the full cycle of the Pentagram Tests. This allows the witch to establish their own atelier and formally train apprentices

Editor's Thoughts
Witch Hat Atelier is a very special series. It is one that truly captivates magic from a mechanical standpoint and the world is brimming with fantasy. The tests add an extra layer of "oomph" to the series and honestly, it makes you even more interested. Because what's a story without a clear goal? The tests give us something to strive for in Coco's life and some of the other main characters. It's truly something special! — Dean
