Daemons of the Shadow Realm has finally come out and the anime is taking the world by storm. This series is one story that will go down in history. Not because it's from the same author behind Fullmetal Alchemist, but because the story is one of hope, strong bonds, and more importantly, strong monsters known as Daemons, which elevates the series to new heights.

There are endless possibilities with this series. It's a more mature version of Pokemon, but with no "catching them" theme. I would say it's closer to Shinigami, which is a race of extra-dimensional beings who live in the Shinigami realm, think Death Note. Daemons aren't exactly that, but that's just a rough estimate of what Daemons are.
Daemons are powerful supernatural creatures that come only in pairs. Certain humans can form a blood contract with them, awakening the pair from relics or statue forms to become loyal partners with special abilities.
We see this in the very first episode, with Yuru placing a symbol (or Dera almost forcing him to) in the ground and pouring blood on it to bring the pair into existence. This is also known as the ritual. The pair are otherworldly beings from the shadow underworld realm and often shapeshift between monstrous and humanoid forms and do not naturally cast shadows.
Left and Right are among the strongest of Daemons.
Left Explained in Daemons of the Shadow Realm

Left is one of the main Daemons, and forms one half of the powerful demon pair who are also referred to as the divine guardians.
The divine guardians are the deities in a sense, of a remote mountain village, that is covered by a barrier which came from the power "Seal." Centuries earlier, Granny Yamaha (the old lady seen at the very start of episode on of the anime) used the power of Seal to create a powerful barrier that isolated and protected Higashi Village from the outside world. This hidden ward made the village extremely difficult to locate and effectively preserved its traditional rural lifestyle and keeping it technologically behind the times.
Left is the female guardian and is a sibling to Right, the other paired daemon. Left is muscular and looks like an oni humanoid with stone hard skin and has immense strength. She has the ability to fly and can release powerful shockwaves and is impervious to Seal powers which complements Right's resistance to Break abilities.
This makes them the perfect duo for Yuru. Left is calm and rational and more importantly is very loyal to Yuru, making her deeply duty-bound.
Right Explained in Daemons of the Shadow Realm

Right is one of the two divine guardians and is Left's sibling. Right is physically a towering figure and is muscular, which fits his oni-like nature. His body is as hard as stone, which grants him immense strength and durability, including the ability to shrug off gunfire, explosions, and even blades.

To put it simply, Right is a wild, thrill-seeking daemon with an uncontrollable love and passion for battle. He’s boisterous, energetic, and aggressively enthusiastic about most things. The majority of the time, he is always charging headfirst into fights with a huge grin on his face. While he appears constantly smiling and cheerful, that smile often feels more like a battle-hungry smirk. We can't really be surprised, as that is who he is deep down to his soul (if we could call it that).
Ultimately, his nature feels a lot closer to a blood knight who lives for the excitement of combat. While he does act dominant and is always "aura farming" most of the time, he always shows gratitude and attachment to Yuru.
Who is stronger, Left or Right?
While Right might seem stronger because of his brute force and aggressiveness, both Left and Right are actually balanced in power. Both possess stone like bodies and power. The big difference is their resistance to the two major abilities, Break and Seal (Right is resistant to Break & Left is resistant to Seal). This makes the two the perfect daemons shine the brightest when fighting as a synergistic team rather than one being more powerful than the other.

What is Break and Seal in Daemons of the Shadow Realm?

Break and Seal are two legendary powers of opposing nature. These powers are mainly tied to the prophesied twins, Yuru and Asa. Break is wielded by Asa (the Twin of Day). Seal is used by Yuru (the Twin of Night).
Break lets the user forcibly unravel or sever anything, including physical objects, barriers, and even Daemon contracts, which turns the Daemons into wild strays.
Seal allows the user to contain, bind, or enclose anything and is even able to create a pocket dimension.

Q&A
Q: What is Daemons of the Shadow Realm about?
The series follows twins Yuru who is the older brother and Asa the younger sister. These two were separated at a young age due to a prophecy. In this world certain humans can contract powerful supernatural pairs called Daemons or Tsugai. The twins are the rare "children who sunder day and night" and have the potential to rule over all Daemons.
Q: Who are the main characters?
A: The central main characters are Yuru the boy with blonde hair and Asa the girl with black hair. Other important characters include Dera which stands as a grandma like figure, Gabby who is the energetic ally, and also my favorite Daemons, Left and Right.
Q: What are Daemons / Tsugai?
Daemons are supernatural spirit entities that always come in pairs and only certain humans can form contracts with them.
Q: Is it similar to Fullmetal Alchemist?
This series has the same creator, Hiromu Arakawa, so it shares her signature style such as things like great world-building, emotional depth, quirky characters, strong action and of course a deep bond between siblings. However, it is a separate story entirely
Editor's Thoughts
Overall, I think Daemons of the Shadow Realm has been a huge success, especially since the anime started airing on Crunchyroll. And as expected, the anime has done exactly what it’s supposed to, that's boosting the manga’s popularity and driving up sales.
One of the standout creations in the series is the Guardian pair, Left and Right who are contracted to Yuru. Their oni inspired design and personality are excellent, and they remind me of Benimaru from That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. What I love most about the series is the deep bond between the twin siblings, Yuru and Asa. It carries that signature Fullmetal Alchemist emotional warmth and sibling dynamic, which feels incredibly welcoming and familiar. — Dean
