Tomb Raider King Explained: From Betrayal to Becoming the King of Tombs

Tomb Raider King has come centre stage into the spotlight mostly because of the big similarities between this one and Solo Leveling. While they might look alike from the outside looking in from a certain perspective, they are completely different stories. However, some things do overlap, like art style, an overpowered protagonist and the premise of a dungeon or in this case a tomb, but other than that they have many differences. To be honest, I thought Tomb Raider king was just a knock off version, till I dived deeper in.

Ultimately if you like an overpowered character, time regression stories or even relic hunting that focuses on a genius protagonist, this story is for you. The manhwa and the anime both feature amazing artwork and humor, with a focus on revenge and a story which consists of the overarching narrative about exploring tombs.

The Brutal Betrayal That Started It All

The story focuses on a protagonist named Seo Joo-Heon, who was at the start a very loyal and hard-working tomb raider for one of the top excavation teams, run by the chairman known as Kwon Tae-Joon - The chairman is plain and simply just ruthless! This trope is pretty common in anime. However this is completely different compared to Solo Leveling where things are destined if you will by an outer System.

This company would go on to exploit Joo-Heon and his team for years and become incredibly rich. They told him that Seo and his team would earn a life-extending elixir however in their final mission inside a deadly Great Prison tomb, that chairman betrayed the entire team and sent them into a lethal trap. The way the manhwa depicts this scene is really interesting, and it's much more captivating knowing the entire root of the cause, which has similarities to real life corporation.

One of the reasons being they knew too many secrets and could become a serious competition later on. However as Joo-Heon was about to face death a relic crow was activated and sent him 15 years back in time just before the tombs began appearing and this gave him a second chance at life and also knowledge of the things that would still happen (he kept his memories intact).

Relics Aren't What They Seem

The relics are one of the core elements in this series. They are ancient supernatural artifacts that appear inside these dungeons or "tombs". We can think of these "relics" as powerful tools and monstrous enemies at the same time. These relics are based on myths, legends and historical stories. However, their most useful function to raiders is that they come with supernatural abilities, which is one of the main reasons they are hunted down by big corporations - making them extremely profitable.

What I like most about this series is the ballance of things, these tools can't just be used as soon as they're grabbed, but in order to use them the user would need to either pass their trial or dominate them in other ways. Each relic has its own unique personality and power and also these relics are mostly arrogant and ultimately hate humans.

Each relic is ranked from D grade all the way up to god-like SSS-tier weapons. These relics usually take on forms of animals, plants or even human beings. Another interesting part of this story is that that after long-term continuous use they cause side effects. However, thanks to a relic which pushed the MC back 15 years, it granted Seo a leveling-like system which eventually gave him the ability to not be affected by such curses or side effects.

Is Tomb Raider King Worth Watching/Reading? My Honest Verdict

Is Tomb Raider King Worth Watching/Reading? My Honest Verdict tomb raider king

YES most definitely! If you're looking for something akin to Solo Leveling, you'll love this but if you are looking for the exact same story then no. While this series does feature the same similarities in many ways, ultimately the story is completely different and gives off a less doom for all and more of a straight path if you will. The MC does have the same aura but he raids and collects relics for more selfish reasons and obviously that revenge part that creates a hook of sorts for the intro.

This story pretty much has it all, a good amount of action, good strategy and a protagonist that's overpowered, not innately but from putting in the work to find the relics. The artwork is amazing in the manhwa and the anime has that over the top animation which we all love. While there's no in depth story here, the pure action and overpowered protagonist is sometimes the only things we need.

The manhwa honestly gets you hooked from the first glance, the story doesn't drag at the beginning, but gets straight into the action. While many people from the outside say its just a solo leveling spin off or knock off, to be honest that is not at all what's going on here, its truly an original work that will get you hooked just as much as Solo Leveling. — Dean
