Best Anime With Tactical Fights and Smart Battles

Best Anime With Tactical Fights and Smart Battles

There's nothing like a good solid battle with all out animation and just blind fury, but what about Best Anime With Tactical Fights and Smart Battles? While blind rage and an all out battle sounds fun, in reality that's kind of sloppy. Now what if we add strategy to these battles, something that enhances the battle and the more intelligent one is the winner, sounds epic right? These smart battles elevate combat in all aspects of each fight, turning it from a mindless slugfests into high stakes chess matches (figuratively speaking) where every move carries weight, abilities are used more creatively, and the more cunning fighter triumphs over brute strength.

If you love anime where brains triumph over pure brawn, here are my Top Anime with the Best Tactical Fights and Smart Battles:

Attack on Titan

Attack on Titan
Wit Studio

Attack on Titan is set in a world where humanity is on the verge of extinction and the last remnants of human civilization live behind these massive walls protecting themselves from mindless rampaging titans. This is also one of the saddest starts to an anime I've seen, the main protagonist, Eren, loses his mother to a titan at the very start, but then joins the elite Survey Corps alongside his childhood friends Mikasa and Armin. However, in discovering the truth about the titans, they find out they are in fact not the last humans in this world.

This is one of the most popular deeply strategy focused anime because the battles literally prioritize intellect, planning and adaptability over raw power. This anime doesn't have many overpowered humans, only a very few humans that can turn into titans. This means strategy is very important to take on big titans that are 20+ times bigger than ordinary humans. Soldiers must manage gas, seek out the right terrain to fight on and more importantly their timing needs to be perfect. What I love most about this series is the strategy actually becomes much more important the further the story progresses.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes

Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Production I.G

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is a series from 1988 - 1997 and was remade later on, that mostly revolves around space and follows an interstellar war between two galactic superpowers, the autocratic Galactic Empire and the democratic Free Planets Alliance. Its core is cantered around political disputes and military operations. It's about two genius protagonists who end up on opposing sides, a noble named Reinhard von Lohengramm and Yang Wen-li, a historian.

This one portrays the smart battles and genuine genius warfare perfectly. Almost every engagement feels like a massive chessboard where every single move counts because, obviously, the positioning in space is important for military superiority. This anime shows the command structure and political consequences and every cost behind the decisions. However, the most fascinating aspect about this series is that you watch two master tacticians who respect each other's intellect constantly countering one another, and no anime comes close to the scale of operations shown in this series.

Saga of Tanya the Evil

Saga of Tanya the Evil
Studio NUT

This is one of my all time favorites, Saga of Tanya the Evil. This is a dark military isekai anime about a cold and ambitious Japanese salaryman who is reincarnated as Tanya Degurechaff, a young blonde girl in an alternate 1930s world that is at war. She is ruthless and has extreme survival instincts but all she wants to do is climb the ranks in the military to live a comfortable life. Sounds like almost every other isekai, right? Well, this one sets itself apart using modern tactics and calculated attacks.

This anime is the best anime that fits the strategy or tactical medium because of the tactical fights and smart battles. It feels more realistic than many other anime. The main protagonist is a ruthless little girl who doesn't rely on raw power or armor, rather she dominates the battlefield through superior strategy and modern weaponry. However, what makes it stand out the most for me is her command over her own created squad. This squad becomes a special unit that can take on enemies at a large scale.

86 -Eighty Six-

86 -Eighty Six-
J.C.Staff

86 -Eighty Six- is a sci-fi drama anime that is set in a futuristic world where the Republic of San Magnolia is at war with the neighboring Empire. However, the Republic claims to be a perfect nation (with race superiority). They use unmanned drones called Juggernauts to fight the Empire, well, at least that's what they want their people to think. In actual fact, these drones are piloted by oppressed people called the Eighty-Six, a racial minority forced to fight on the front lines while the Republic’s citizens live in luxury behind safe walls. This is honestly a very emotional story but feels like a masterpiece.

Honestly, the main character is a complete badass. Shin is the leader of a squadron and they call him the Reaper or Undertaker not because of how dangerous he is (which in actual fact he's very dangerous and a genius on the battlefield), but because he's the only one who has survived out of hundreds of others. So he collects each of their dog tags to remember them, which equates to over 500.

How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom

How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom
J.C.Staff

How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom follows a summoned hero from another world who is a boy named Souma. He uses knowledge from his previous life to rebuild a kingdom which is on the brink of ruin. However, instead of fighting monsters or demons with swords and magic like your typical isekai or fantasy anime, this one uses knowledge of economics, logistics, and politics to save a nation.

What I love about this series is that even though it has almost zero fights or very little of it with the protagonist, it's still highly enjoyable. The main protagonist uses his brain and comes up with clever tactics especially during big wars. For example, during the One Week War there were large-scale tactics involved such as stalling enemy advances with misinformation and decoys, clever use of terrain and supply lines, coordinated multi-front operations, and turning enemy overconfidence against them. Every episode feels like one big clever idea and the series always has you wondering what Souma Kazuya will do next.

Kingdom

Kingdom anime
Studio Pierrot

Kingdom is a historical anime with tons of focus on large scale ground battles set during China's brutal Warring States period, 200 BC. This story follows Shin who is a war orphan and former slave with big dreams of becoming the greatest general under the heavens.

This is one of the most well known large scale war anime out there, think large amounts of horse and riders fighting on the battlefield. If we think of a pure strategy anime, this one definitely sits at the top as it primarily focuses on a strategist trying to work the battlefield till the enemy's general is defeated, winning the war.

No Game No Life

No Game No Life
studio Madhouse

No Game No Life is one of the most popular isekai stories that follow Sora and Shiro, who are brother and sister and are known online as undefeated gamers by the team name Blank. They are transported to a fantasy world where all conflicts are decided by games, and now they must use their unmatched genius to help a declining human race against other powerful races.

The main standout in this series fits the title of this article perfectly. Sora and Shiro are geniuses and have the ability to read and predict opponents' moves (not supernaturally). The whole concept of this series is based around mind games and the chessboard mindset, if you will.

Death Note

Death Note
studio Madhouse

Death Note is a psychological thriller anime that has been at the top of lists for years. The anime follows a protagonist named Light Yagami, a brilliant high school student who discovers a supernatural notebook called the Death Note. Anyone whose name is written in this book dies, and Light decides to use it to eliminate criminals and become a god-like vigilante known as Kira.

This series is one of my all time favorites and is considered the best strategy anime of all time because it focuses entirely around a genius high-stakes battle of the mind rather than physical power. The main protagonist is a genius who is constantly outthinking his opponent until he eventually meets his match. It is personally to me one of the greatest stories ever told and has a solid ending that's sad but worth it.
