Witch Hat Atelier is one of the more detailed worlds in the anime/manga landscape today. This world adopts a more realistic way of creating magic by drawing precise sigils using a special ink to activate. This is especially different than the more typical way that other shows portray using magic, such as an innate ability or divine powers given by a god.

This is one of the reasons I decided to dive deep into the series. This world is brimming with life and everything feels like there's a purpose. The story has several key arcs that are simply a masterpiece, such as Coco's first test or even more importantly, the introduction to the story and Coco's background.
Top 7 Story Arcs in Witch Hat Atelier Ranked (No Spoilers)

Witch Hat Atelier has no shortage of great arcs, each one flows perfectly into one another. While some may look distinct at times, you can still feel the same atmosphere and the story continuing like a film rather than separate arcs.
Some arcs feel more dangerous but still keep the same fantasy tone and atmosphere, these arcs are especially my favorite. They have a fantasy aura to them that feels unique to this series. Sure, there are many fantasies out there, but I have yet to see any that would directly rival this one. These arcs are so good that giving them a ranking almost doesn't feel fair, but I will still rank them from my personal good to best based on enjoyment without any spoilers.
Introduction Arc (including Coco’s background)

The introduction arc sets the main foundation to the series, and in any story, it's one of the main drivers that determines if people will stay invested or drop the series. It's more than deserving to be placed on this list.
This arc serves as an entry point into the story and introduces all the characters, including our main lovable, full of energy protagonist, Coco. Through her perspective we get to see the beautiful world being told from someone who has dreamed of becoming a witch since a young age, despite everyone telling her it is impossible.
This is a short arc but it leaves a lasting impression, and one that I'm sure none of us will forget.
First Pentagram Test Arc

This arc stands out as one of the best because it condenses the world-building and Coco’s character growth into just a couple of chapters. These few chapters also serve as the very first essential step of the series: the tests that all apprentices must pass to become a full-fledged witch.

The First Pentagram Test showcases Coco’s deep love for magic and her unwavering courage to reach her goals. It’s a short, self-contained arc that focuses heavily on creativity and personal problem solving with the unique drawing based magic system, which is one of the most unique spins on a fantasy out there right now. Many readers, including myself, consider this arc the moment the manga truly clicked.
Great Hall Arc

One of the most visually pleasing arcs in the story, The Great Hall arc. This arc takes the story to a new landscape and it's simply beautiful.
Qifrey takes his apprentices to an underwater stronghold where they must take a special test that will be judged by the ancient Lord Beladaruit, but the preparation time is short.
This arc is one of the most loved because it delivers a stunning world through the most unique setting in the series so far.
River Rescue Arc

This arc covers chapters 10 to 12 and is short but very impactful. It’s one of those arcs where I really got invested after reading it. It brings out the best in Coco and shows us Agott is actually kind hearted deep down.
Agott was initially grumpy and overall not pleasant to be around, especially toward non-witches. This arc showcases how the apprentices, more precisely Agott and Coco work under pressure. It also introduces the Knights Moralis, which makes it one of the introductory chapters that adds new lore to the story.

Many people consider this one of the best early arcs because it highlights the importance of creative and strategic thinking. For example, Coco needs to use magic to save lives, but she needs to think carefully because non-witches were watching.
Second Pentagram Test Arc

While other earlier arcs give explanations to the story and add more to the foundation, this arc is considered one of the best because it introduces more action and is regarded as the first major risk arc. By that, I mean more danger and higher risks to the apprentices lives.
Two of Qifrey's apprentices must take the Second Pentagram Test, and this one one is far more dangerous in comparison to the first test. However, what starts as a standard qualification test quickly spirals into chaos when uninvited guests intervene. This is truly where Witch Hat Atelier first levels up into a deeper and more emotional story, and the themes feel more mature during and after this arc.

Silver Eve Arc (the big festival arc)

If you like grand festivals and big power showcasing events, this arc (The Silver Eve Arc) from Witch Hat Atelier is one of the best! It proudly showcases the witches’ finest spells, performances, and more importantly, their magical creations. During this arc, a darker plot lingers in the background and gives chilling vibes as soon as it unfolds.
This arc blends worldbuilding, pure emotion, and some serious consequences. The stunning visuals in this arc are one of the main things that stand out to me. Among many manga readers, this is where the story fully levels up and becomes truly mature.
Draconic Labyrinth Arc

This is one of the earlier arcs in the series, and call it nostalgia or whatever, but this arc really took a complete turn in the story and just showcases how wonderful and deep this world goes. This is one of the arcs that drives emotion and action because we really see the apprentices come together and showcase their talent, despite Coco not having much power since it’s a very early arc.

This arc directly showcases the unique magic system and fleshes out the introduction to the story while adding a deeper connection to the characters. We also see Qifrey in all his glory showcase his talent masterfully, I might add.
While there are other good arcs in the story, this arc is the main one that caught my interest. It has everything: the introduction to the magic, badass combat scenes with fantasy creatures, and some fight scenes that you just can’t forget.
Editor's Thoughts
Witch Hat Atelier has no shortage of great arcs and it's one of the best mangas I've read. Each arc is made with so much passion that you just got to love each one. The intricate details is what really makes it stand out, especially the deeper lore of the story. It’s also a perfect entry point into the broader world and themes of Witch Hat Atelier as a whole.
One of the best things about the story is the characters, Qifrey gives off some serious Gojo vibes while Coco is this bubbly full of life girl who dreams of magic and finally sees her wish come true. It's not just any ordinary story its a masterpiece that rivals the best fantasy stories out there. With the Manga doing so well and the anime airing on Crunchyroll with Studio Bug Films at the helm, the future is looking very bright. — Dean
