How to Watch Witch Hat Atelier Series in Correct Order

Witch Hat Atelier has taken the fantasy genre by storm, even sparking a lot of discussions online with people saying it rivals or even overshadows Frieren. Being that Frieren was a massive hit before the anime, it was only natural for the anime to follow, and of course depending on which studio animated it. And ofcourse Studio Madhouse nailed it. Afterall it's now siting at the number 1 spot on sites like MyAnimeList.

Witch Hat Atelier was a massive success as well before the anime even aired. The manga is a critically acclaimed fantasy by Kamome Shirahama and it's well celebrated for its creative magic system, and honestly this is my favourite thing about the series as well. This sytem is very unique when it comes to anime/manga.

The series has also won prestigious awards including the Harvey Award for Best Manga and is praised by many fans for its Ghibli-like worldbuilding and heartwarming, mature scenes. It doesn't include your typical fan service which is refreshing given that most fantasies include some of that in one way or another.

Season 1 of Witch Hat Atelier is animated by Studio Bug Films and based on everything that was shown, this season nailed the captivating world and the small details right out of the manga.

BUG FILMS is a relatively new anime studio and was founded on September 22, 2021, and was actually a subsidiary of Twin Engine Inc. If you don't know Twin Engine Inc., they are a well-known Japanese planning and production company. You may know their works such as Vinland Saga seasons 1 and 2, Dororo, Hell's Paradise, and many more.

What is Season 1 About

Season 1 of Witch Hat Atelier focuses mainly on the introduction to the series, such as how magic is actually done, and we will see a more in-depth view of someone who was never a witch and has never known anything about how magic actually works. Then suddenly getting introduced into the world of magic, and I'm talking about a cheerful and very positive character, Coco.

We get to see how this world works and of course the hierarchy and how the magic world is ruled, and who enforces it. We also get to see one of the best characters in a fantasy anime, Qifrey. He gives off serious Gojo vibes and his magic power is something to be praised. Well, in this world skill is more of the right term to use when describing magic because it relies on a witch's skill and knowledge rather than some innate ability.

Main Characters:

Qifrey: Qifrey is a skilled, mysterious, and gentle witch who runs the remote atelier and takes Coco as his fourth apprentice.

Olruggio: He is a serious and dependable witch who often helps Qifrey manage the atelier and keep the young apprentices in line.

Coco: This is the main protagonist. She is a cheerful, kind-hearted, and endlessly curious young girl from a dressmaker's family who dreams of becoming a witch.

Agott Arklaum: One of Qifrey's 4 apprentices. She is a serious, studious, and highly talented young witch who's academically focused and a bit aloof at first.

Tetia: Tetia is a bubbly, outgoing, and very enthusiastic apprentice with wavy pink hair in twin tails. She energetic, friendly, and always ready to help or chat with her fellow apprentices.

Richeh: She is the quiet, reclusive, and somewhat blunt apprentice out of the lot, who's more introspective and less expressive.

Is Witch Hat Atelier Worth Watching?

ABSOLUTELY YES, 100 percent. The series is filled with wonder and you can read the manga if you really want, but I suggest you watch the anime first. This adapts a much faster pace compared to reading it, and most of all, you can get the emotional connection instead of a faint image from the manga. The manga only captures a certain side, however the anime captures everything from the emotions to the voice acting.

One of the main things you will see is how the studio captured the series. It's done with love and passion, not some cheap adaptation to get extra money like many out there who will not be named haha, but you guys know exactly which ones they are. But yeah, honestly it's definitely worth at least watching a few episodes before you make up your mind.

Editor's Thoughts

Overall this is a beautiful series and one of my favorite mangas out there. From the very first read I was hooked in this world and of course connected to the characters. Coco with her bright self and Qifrey with his knightly ways and the fatherly figure really captured me. Honestly 10/10 story! — Dean
