The True Nature of Daemons in Daemons of the Shadow Realm: Pairs from the Underworld Explained

The true nature of Daemons in Daemons of the Shadow Realm runs far deeper than it first appears from the outside. These Pairs from the Underworld who are also known as Tsugai, do not possess a single fixed appearance. Instead, their true form refers to their awakened supernatural state. An otherworldly essence that exists beyond the sealed relics or statues in which they often slumber. To give a more exact example, during episode 2 we see Yuru's Daemons, Left and Right sort of posses the 2 statues.

Unlike many typical demons portrayed as purely chaotic or malevolent forces from other stories or even your typical fantasy lore, the Daemons in this series embody duality at their very core. Much like the classic concept of yin and yang, they represent balance: two complementary halves that are incomplete without each other, bound together in harmony and opposition. Well. that the short end of but by the end of this article, you will know everything about these

The Shadow Realm Is Not What You Think

The Shadow Realm refers to Yomi, which is the ancient Japanese underworld. This area is a domain of sorts, although it's not a fully separate dimension that the characters visit. I would describe it as the source of power connected to the Daemons.

This Shadow Realm gives the Daemons their otherworldly shapeshifting nature, which allows them to take monster-like combat forms or even humanoid appearances like Left and Right. Ultimately, this other dimension (Shadow Realm) refers to that hinge or boundary between the living world and the realm of spirits. This is the source from which the Daemons originate, but initially in an intermediate state which is neither dead nor alive.

The Ritual Only Seers Can Perform

Only certain humans possess this rare ability to awaken and actually contract with a Daemon and these individuals are known as Seers. They are the only ones capable of performing the blood ritual to form a contract with a Daemon pair.

What sets Seers apart from ordinary people is their innate gift. This is the natural ability to perceive and interact with Daemons, which remain completely invisible to everyone else. A Seer can see past the spiritual veil that hides these entities from normal human eyes. This special sensitivity, sometimes simply referred to as “the gift,” is quite rare and is what allows them to detect, awaken, and bond with Daemons.

However the story does not explicitly explain or provide a deeper origin of this ability or how one is actually born with this gift.

To perform this special ritual to wake up a pair of Daemons, as I mentioned previously, only people called Seers can do this ritual. To perform this, a Seer would take the Daemon's totem which is like a statue or special object where the Daemons are sleeping (in Yuru's case from episode 1, the green little totem taken to the statues) and drop some of their own blood on it and that's it! Just a few drops of blood will activate the totem and once the blood touches that totem, the Daemons wake up and become strong, and more importantly stay loyal to the person who gave the blood.

Common Misconceptions About Daemons

  • Are Daemons Evil or Good? - Some people think Daemons are evil monsters or typical bloodthirsty demons like in other anime and fantasy stories, but they are not inherently evil at all. They are honestly loyal beings but their "evilness" ultimately depends on their master

  • Can Daemons Exist on Their Own? - Some people assume Daemons can appear alone, when in reality they always exist in inseparable pairs and are incomplete without their other half. This is because one of the pair always makes up for the other ones weakness. They create a balance of sorts.

  • Do Daemons Have Personalities? - Some viewers expect Daemons to be mindless beasts or only controllable without any personality. However they actually have distinct personalities, strong loyalty to their master, and form deep bonds.

  • Do Daemons Come from Hell? - There’s a misconception that Daemons are chaotic forces from hell. But in truth, they come from the Shadow Realm existing in a mysterious state that is neither fully dead nor alive.

Editor's Thoughts

In this world, daemons stand as the ultimate supernatural beings. These are powerful entities that manifest exclusively in loyal pairs, for example Yuru's Left and Right, and forge blood contracts with chosen humans. While some have overwhelming raw strength, such as Yuru's daemons, others offer a more versatile approach with their abilities that function like specialized tools of sorts. This can be used in battle and daily life, which is honestly sometimes better than only battle types.

A prime example of this is Asa's daemon pair, Ohagi and Daifuku, which can merge into a colossal form capable of creating an almost endless pocket dimension. This space allows her to store enemies, objects, allies, or even transport and imprison humans at will, all under her complete control. To me, daemons feel like Pokémon, but with a darker, more modern and thoughtfully developed look. Personally, Yuru's daemons, the stone-like duo known as Left and Right (or Migi and Hidari), are especially impressive.

They have enormous and imposing forms that let them self-repair from damage, and even use fierce combat powers, including flight and shockwave attacks, but mainly in their golden state. Despite the male daemon's hot-headed personality, the pair remains incredibly loyal to Yuru, making them one of my favorite guardians and perfect complements to his fighting style. Ultimately, all daemons have some sort of usefulness, but to me the one thing that stands out the most is all of their undying loyalty.
